View Full Version : Three contradictions in the series

Ruronin Kenshin is one of the most entertaining Martial Arts series ever created because because of its historical background and thoroughly explained techniques. Hence the suspension of disbelief required is low, allowing the viewer to fully immerse him (or her) self in the heartwarmingly heroic world of the series.

However, there are three minor quibbles:

1)Sagar Sannosuke's background is that of a peasant born in the Edo era of Tokugawa, in which it is already difficult enough for sons of nobility, let alone a farmer boy, to have any time or means for an education. And yet despite spending the Ten years after the Bakufamatsu doing nothing but fighting and gambling, several times during the series he is shown to be fully capable of literacy.

2) Now this is a MAJOR gripe. Fuji, the literal GIANT of the Ten Swords, is about at least as tall as a ten (more likely sixteen) storie tall building.

Now, the so called "KUZURYUSEN" technique of the Hitenmisturugi-Ryu style of Kenjutsu is one of SIMULTANEOUSLY striking all the points of vulnerabilities of an individual in one instant. A single attack striking all weak points is somewhat realistic, for in learning Kenjutsu for three years I have witnessed single cuts that encompass a foe's whole body.

However, the KUZURYUSEN was only plausible when it was used against foes the size of fellow homo-sapiens. In possibly the most ludicrous moment of RK, Hiko Seijuro defeated Fuji the Sixteen Stories Tall Giant WITH the said technique. Now unless Hiko had a sword the size of a BUS, a plausible use of the KUZURYUSEN on Fuji would be a long shot.

3) COME ON!! We all know Hiko Seijuro is a master swordsman, but BLOCKING A SWORD THE SIZE OF A BUS and holding it up with A SWORD THAT IS THREE FOOT LONG is a REAL BIG STRETCH, isn't it?

Now I know Fuji was NEVER meant to be a realsitic character, but dammit that scene almost ruined the series because it asked the viewers not only to forcefully suspend their disbelief, but patronised us like idiots.

But besides these RELATIVELY minor flaws, RK is still a masterpiece

Good Night.

I have to admit, you made some really good points about RK, and you will not get an argument from me. Still, it is worth considering that If one looks at RK in to realistic a light, you will find fantastic stretches of the imagination everywhere you look.

To a degree, every major character has displayed abilitities far beyond what ANY human could hope to accomplish. I won't go into details, because the series is not out professionally yet, but this story is larger than life and is made more enjoyable for it.

Hiko Sejiro blocked the giant sword with the sharp edge facing his arm protector. I cant help but wonder, howcome his arm wasnt cut of from the force of that giant's blow.
