Is Sailor Moon more aimed at the Female or Male community???
I think in the Dubbed it's aimed at the Female community, because it's like a role model for the young children. If these females can save the world numours times then the girls have someone to look up to. The only problem about this is, they have to cencer it to be aimed at the 5-12 year olds.
But what about in Japan? Is it still aimed at the Female community with the same age group in mind. I highly doubt it. I think it's the matter of eye candy. Because really, can their uniforms get any skimpier. I doubt it. So while Sailor Moon probally isn't ment to be aimed at the 5-12 year old females, really it's probally better that it is.

The original sailor moon was never meant as a role model for young girls, or any young children for that matter. The first two seasons, Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R, targetted teenage girls. During the run of those two seasons, the creators realized that a male following was possible, so they decided to make some slight changes. Sailor Moon Super, Sailor Moon Supers, and Sailor Stars target both teenage boys and teenage girls. Starting with SMS, the storylines became a little darker, there was a little more violence, the outer senshi were introduced, and in an interview with the creators, they admitted that Haruka's boyish appearance and attitude was actually thought up as a way of creating a Male-like character (based on the theory that boys will watch a show more often if it has a strong male character as opposed to an all female cast).
Things that appeal to males also become more evident as the series progresses, with an increase in TV show-class fan service and scantily clad villains (I litterally couldn't believe the amazon quartet). Even though the later seasons were designed to appeal to both genders, I'm not exactly sure what was going on with SuperS. In my opinion, someone was on crack during the development of that season.

Well, the N.A. dubs, yeah, they're too female based. The actual animé, no, Naoko Takeuchi has several times said she does not aim it towards males nor females. It's just good.
re: Robotech Master oh! oh! but MAMORU is a strong male character....*scoffs and falls over* (sorry, couldn't help myself...)
And speaking of scantily clad senshi, yeah, the amazon quartet was pretty scary, though tey look cool, and whoa, the three lgihts. hah. but they havn't come to america yet, have they? hmm. i have trouble keeping up.

i red an article recently on naoko's comment about this.... she said that the tv series was aimed more at the male community coz most of the people she worked with making the tv series were males, while the manga was more aimed at the female community coz she made it to entertain and reach girls/female like her.

I vaguly remember it being targeted at the Adult males... *shrugs* that's what i thought..... cuz i mean the undubbed version is hentaish..
Sailor Moon in Japan is aimed at girls ages 7-12.
I dun know why the show features girls in mini-skirts and has hentaish references, but if you watch any other Magical Girl anime, you'll find the same things (i.e. Magic Knight Rayearth).
In Japan, it's considered normal, I guess.

I am afriad I am going to have to disagree.
Sailor Moon, as it was originally published was totally targeted as a girls' series. It was published in a shojo manga, it was a magical girl series. Traditionally in Japan, the magical genre was nigh totally for girls with the notable exception of the Minky Momo series in the early 80's (In 1982 I believe.).
Now, if Naoko Takeuchi actually tried to create a male audience for her series, I of course do not know for certain. But, if she did, publishing it in a shojo manga series was obviously not the right way to do it since that pratically gurantees a boy will not touch it.
Still, the way she incoproated sentai elemnts to the series certainly does lend creedence to her having some idea that she wanted to eventually reach a wider auidience.
I honestly believe it was intended as a shojo series and Naoko actually got the right elemetns together to make a success outside it's own target audience.
Basically, I believe Naoko "knew" she could make it a shojo hit, but was hoping to make it more attractive to others so as to make it a universal one.

You're referring to the Manga in that respect. Read the above responses in this post. It was already established by the creator of Sailor Moon that the TV series was made to appeal to both Males and Females, especially males since most of her staff were males. The Manga was intended for Females.
Nuff said.

Seeing as how she did not know there was going to be an anime series when she did the manga, I still find her words a bit hard to swallow. Even manga artists might like to give themselves a little too big pat on the back. Although if she did say that, I cannot exactly prove she did not have such forsight, so I step down from my claim.
I still do not see a big enough difference in the early TV epsidoes and the manga to warrant any arguemnt that the TV series had any difference in intended market at all, especially in Japan where most boys at the time would not touch a show about magical girls.
Purposefully aiming a TV show based off a shojo manga and about magical girls toward a male audience in Japan would be a truly bad marketing ploy if there ever was one. I just do not believe this was done intentionally since next to no producer would likely take a chance this big. A part of me cannot help but think she might just be giving herself far to big a pat on the back for forsite when what she really got was just lucky.
In my opinion it was intended mostly for the female audience......

Hey, it could have been worse! Saban could have gotten the rights to it! I've seen clips of what they would have done to it, and it was just.... Wrong. Compared to that, DiC did a great job! I have rather have Serena saying "Wicked Cool!" than have Rei be in a wheelchair, and Ami be hispanic, or something like that... It was gonna be half live-action too... C'mon, Sera-Myu is bad enough, do we really need an American version?

Yeah I kinda have to agree with you on that one. Too bad it has to be that way. But it would be messed up if they made Rei hispanic. I laugh just thinking how she would look!!!!!

Yeah, I saw the Saban's "promotional" video on how they would do Sailor Moon one time. It was the worst thing I have seen in a long time. When the senshi are not transformed, it's in live action. The girls all look like they were on crack. I think Jupiter was the one in the wheelchair though. It's also pretty ridiculous in the animation. They were riding some kinda windboards through space or something. Something you'd have to see to believe.

Otaku-sama, your post just reminded me of something. I thought I read somewhere that Naoko had some sort of deal so the manga and the anime came out simutaneously. I won't swear to it, though, because I can't remember where on earth I read that. If I find out, I'll post. :)
I've noticed that all my posts in this forum are kinda vague. Sorry about that. I used to be really into Sailor Moon several years ago, but I kinda fell out of it once I started getting into Ranma. It's been a while, so I can't remember what I've read and where I read it. I'll try to be better, promise. ;)
