'no da' is just another older way of saying 'desu'
just like in kenshin 'desu' is replaced with 'de gozaru' chichiri uses 'no da' in place of 'desu'

ok was does desu mean? :heh:
'desu' means 'to be'. you can use 'na no da' in place of 'desu' at the end of a sentence.
example:
Atashi no namae wa Yumiko desu.
Atashi no namae wa Yumiko no da.

Actually, I've learned and assumed that "Desu" is a verb by itself. You can't use "No Da" or "De Gozaru yo" in its place. However, "Desu" is often omitted in Japanese speech these days. Therefore, I could say," Ore wa Doku desu" or I could say it, "Ore wa Doku". "No Da" and "De Gozaru yo" are more like verbal emphasis...like actually saying "Hey there, Exaclaimation." Its basically just something a person will say to give more force to what they are saying. Chichiri did it because in his home village and its region of Konan the dialect included "No Da" as a regular part of every day speech. I could say "Ore wa Doku desu na no da de gozaru yo" if you felt like it. It'd be equivalent to "I'm Doku!!!!!!!" In the dub of FY they translated "No Da" into "Y'know" as an emphasis. I've also seen it as "So there" and "See?" but it really DOESN'T have an actual meaning or translation. Just think of it as a way of adding an extra "UMPH" to your speech. When I want to make a point, like putting my foot down, I'll add in "No Da/Na No Da" or "De Gozaru". (Unless you're really familiar with Japanese it doesn't make all that much sense...I still have trouble explaining it because I'm a student.) You can also add an "n'da" contraction. I've got a book somewhere that explains it...Ah, here...."Appended to verbs as well as other parts of speech to emphasize cause, reason, the speaker's resolution or a demand made on someone by the speaker"

The thread topic....I don't think the question isn't really dumb. A lot of people don't know what "no da" means. Including me.
I always thought Chichiri was saying, "no duh" but now thanks to you guys I sorta understand what it means now. Thankles :)
