rei - pilot of unit 00
asuka - pilot of unit 02
shinji - pilot of unit 01

why isn't asuka pilot of unit 01, seeing as she's the 2nd child? is it because her and her eva came from germany and units 00 and 01 were manufactured in japan?

Could also be part of Yuis plan that she gets absorbed into Unit-01 and have Shinji as the pilot.

I think that it just happened that way because Rei was made for piloting eva, she was there from the start, so she got the first one, unit 01 was special so was reserved for shinji, and unit 02 was made in Germany, Asuka was in germany, so thats how she got training. Just in the order they were made, i suppose.
