It's just there for comedic value -- It's a site gag. It's also something to look for, "Where will the cat show up THIS time?"

Or you could get all deep and say that the cat is God, since it is always around no matter where they go.

It is related to the Manga, (I rthink an earlier work) The cats name is something silly like Mr (Something very violent) I can't remember. I think I read about it here

The cat's name is Kuroneko-samma(Lord Black Cat) or Kuroneko-Kukkan (Black Cat space)and he basically only exists for the purpose of comic relief. Notice that he usually pops up when the action is sarting to get really dramatic. He breaks up the tension. :D

The non-sequitour engima of a cat was placed in Trigun for pure comic relief.I like the little cat.He makes me laugh when ever i see him appear in the un-likely situations :lol:

like when Wolfwood opens his bag in episode 12,he pulls out mr.black cat and it goes "meow" I just cracked up :lol:

My brother just baought a Vash action figure and it comes with a little toy cat too. ^_^ I'm totally gonna steal it next time I go see him :D

Mascots are just cute characters full of marketing potential that are logos you can instantly identify the show with.

For instance, "Excel Saga", one of THE most unwholesome (YET HILARIOUS) shows out there, THE antithesis of a Magic Girl Show, has its female lead constantly attempt/threaten to eat the show's ADORABLE puppy, Menchi. And yet although all she does is cry and try to escape, Menchi is the show's mascot.

Also, Mascots need not always be animals. Plenty of adorable (usually female) Homo Sapiens have made it as Anime Mascots in Non-Magic Girl Shows out there. For Instance:

Ayane, Suzume and Myojin Yahiko: Ruronin Kenshin
