The other day while I was watching a show on The Learning Channel they were talking about this liquid stuff called Liqua-vent,(I think this is what they called it). This stuff does exactly what LCL does. On the show, they talked about how they filled a baby's lungs with this stuff and it kept the baby alive. Cool isn't it?

Liqua-vent? The closest thing I have heard about breathable liquid was a goo made by the government that was oxygen rich and capable of oxygenating the blood stream. Anyway, someone has tld me that they suspect LCL to be amneaotic (?) fluid released before the birth of a child. It smells similar to blood and (by my knowledge) to be breathed by the baby while in the womb.

Yeah, I got a friend who's a biomedical student, and I remember her telling me something like that immediately after a baby is born, you can submerse it underwater and it can still breathe, cos like David Ikari says, the fluid in the mother's womb allows the baby to breathe.

Um...amniotic fluid is clear stuff...and it doesn't smell like blood. The baby swallows it while it's in the womb and yes it does fill the lungs, but the baby doesn't get oxygen from it so it doesn't really "breathe" it...all the oxygen comes from the mother's blood via the placenta and through the umbilical cord.

That whole thing with the "water babies"...you know, taking babies for a swim and stuff...is not that babies can breathe underwater, it's that the reflex remembered from being in the womb makes them instinctively NOT breathe when they're surrounded by fluid.

anyone ever see the movie "the abyss"? there is a special suit built for reciving a sunken nuke, the warhead is so deep down that a diver or even a sub would be crushed so the suit fills up with an oxgenated pink liquid to negate the presure, the diver reacts almost exactly the way shingi does when he first pilots eva 01

The thing about babies breathing underwater... I don't think it has anything to do with being in the womb... after all, the same thing doesn't happen to monkeys.

I read in a book by this guy called Desmond Morris that it has something to do with an evolutionary period where our ancestors lived near water...

Yes! i saw The Abyss. That was a cool movie. I remember that part part with the white rat; the guy put it in the bowl thing and covered it and the rat was still alive and moving aroung and stuff.
