Ok, people... before we start, let's not get too graphic here. I'm probably going to discuss yuri here too... let's keep it subtle so that this thread causes minimal offence and doesn't get deleted. Ok?
For those who don't know, shoujo ai refers to romantic fiction of a girl/girl nature, and shounen ai refers to romantic fiction of a boy/boy nature. Yaoi is the sexual form of shounen ai, while yuri is the sexual form of shoujo ai. Ok... it's probably a story that many of you have heard a lot, but it's true - shounen ai is in much greater abundance than shoujo ai. But why must this be so? Does anyone know the actual reason? I'm convinced there is one... this can't be a coincidence. There must be some explination for this... And while I'm on the subject, are there any other shoujo ai addicts in the forum? I've never actually heard from any. And a note to anyone who might think about deleting this thread.. please reconsider! This thread is here to discuss amounts of material and preferences in a SUBTLE manner, and it's not intended to be a hentai thread. |
I've never even seen or heard of any Shoujo Ai, so your observation that it is rare rings pretty true (wasn't even aware that there WAS such a thing). There are plenty of Shounen Ais around, but I haven't seen any of those, either.... nor do I really want to -- just lending support. :)

thats cuz shounen ai has been deeply rooted in shoujo mangas since the beginning while shoujo ai is only now starting to appear. usually, when it refers to shoujo ai, its more of a friendship thing than anything else. an example would be Kare Kano, and Hano's supposed "secret admirer" being a girl. Also, its not uncommon for 2 girls to share a bed during a sleepover. just friends, not lovers.

Yes, I remember Asuka and Hikari sharing a bed in a later episode of Evangelion. (These are two that I usually pair together when writing.)
It's still strange to me that nobody thought of shoujo ai before... but then, shoujo manga was usually about romance (so shounen ai could be implemented easily), and shounen manga was usually about fighting (so shoujo ai is not so easy to imlpement). It kinda makes sense. But still, I can't deny that I love shoujo ai to bits. To anyone who is wondering where they can find a sample or two... just search for something like 'Gundam Wing shoujo ai' or 'Sailor Moon shoujo ai' on a search engine like Altavista or Google, it usually finds LOADS. :B: I actually started a discussion club about shoujo ai on yahoo clubs... for anyone who wants to join, follow this link. Nobody's joined yet... probably because everyone sees a club with 1 member and thinks "no thanks", which makes you wonder how clubs with thousands of members got to be like that. :p |
Personally, I think shoujo ai is present, just not considered a formal genre. Look at Oniisama-E--it's shoujo-ai, but it's never outright called such. There's a lot of girl-girl stuff in anime, and it's almost omnipresent in shoujo anime/manga. I think it's the fact that there's hints of shoujo-ai in so many series that prevents shoujo-ai from becoming a formal genre.
...or did I just not make any sense -_- |
same with 'rose of the versailles'. shoujo-ai is only hinted, never really brought forth.
as for someone who wants it brought forth, there are the yuri doushinjis made by men, for men, which are basically the same as hentai mangas. no real plot. |
Yeah, I d/l yuri dojinshi whenever I can find it... but they have this awful habit of just slipping men in when they feel like it. Yuri, as with all 'material' of it's type, is better when it's made by women, though. In those instances, it relies much less on sexual myths, and thus paints a more accurate picture. Yeah, right, like I look at yuri for an 'accurate picture'! :B:
