I haven't seen Twelve Kingdoms, but I have seen Berserk and the first two Kenshin OVAs.

Berserk is easily in my top ten anime list. My two gripes with it are that you can tell it's an older series from the animation and something I'll mention below. There are times when things flow smooth and detailed, but more often than not you get freeze-frame slicing shots of something getting hacked up rather than the "real thing." But the art is great. The character facial designs break from most anime traditions, the backgrounds flow into the moods of each scene, and the "set design" is quite effective.

It ranks up there in terms of raw violence, primarily because it's based in an medieval world and there is plenty of dirty work to be done. In one sense it's similar to Now and Then, Here and There because it pulls no punches and the characters are treated honestly. The ending is a massive shocker which is kind of a shame and the other semi-gripe I have with the show, but that's partly due to the fact that the manga goes far beyond what we see in the anime and I guess the folks behind anime wanted to introduce some of the deeper elements of the manga in before the series came to a close.

The first two Samurai X OVA episodes ("Trust" and "Betrayal") work well as introductions to the Rurouni Kenshin series and also as all-around good introductions to the "historical samurai ethic" kind of anime. Very good graphics, appropriate music, and just enough left unsaid under the surface to think about later on. I haven't seen "Reflections" so I can't comment on that.

I just finished watching volume 3 of DVD and I just don't find the story intriguing enough to continue. It really does show that this is based on a novel, way too wordy and very little human interaction, it's like watching history channel. I also don't like how the story is going with the characters, Sugimoto already went back when they made such a big deal about how going back is impossible, and Nakajima became the ruler yet she goes on another lonesome journey? So repetitive. I would have liked to see her going through the issues of ruling a country, but no, they had to send her off on a journey by herself again when she's the queen, that makes no sense. And is that such a big secret that the Kou king wanted Nakajima assassinated? Where is the suspense? And I really felt shortchanged when they didn't even show the coup battle, short on animation budget I guess. The nonsense factor reached its full capacity when they introduced a new character in the real world who painted the shape of twelve kingdoms, am I suppose to get spooky about it? What the hell. I don't care for the new character, I care less for Sugimoto now that she went back home, and I really don't get what Nakajima's issues are, she has changed way too much without proper reason, and that's not very convincing. The talking rat is the only interesting character so far, and that's not a good sign. And I think Keiki is a dumbass of a kirin, he just don't pick the right ones for the throne does he? Idiot fool. Anyway, that's how I feel, and maybe I'll go back to this one if I feel like it, but for now, I'm going to check out Haibane Renmei, and a little gem called Gunparade March.

RE: would have liked to see her going through the issues of ruling a country, but no, they had to send her off on a journey by herself again when she's the queen, that makes no sense.

Her journey not only makes perfect sense, it turned out to be the thing that helped her uncover a conspiracy that went far beyond anything King Kou planned. And I think discovering corrupt officials within your own appointed group of provincial lords who rule their citizens with iron fists and treat your own citizens like cattle and then trying to do something to make the wrong things right entails the "issues of ruling a country."

It really is a great series, but yes it involves a lot of dialogue and storytelling. If that's what's turning you off from it I wouldn't suggest Haibane Renmei, as that is a very character-dialogue heavy series. Gunparade March...eh, I don't know, maybe you'd like it, but I didn't think much of the first episode and I heard the rest of the series doesn't get any better.

Yes he has one pick before Yoko and you have no idea how Yoko turns out (but I'm sure you will beg to differ ), more brilliant logic from newtype 05

Gunparade March a gem lol, what next the amazing Tekken The Motion Picture? The brilliant story of RG Vega, the best live action movie ever in G-Savior?

I thought she was the ruler of Kei, not Kou, so why would she go there to find out about her country? She knows that Kou king was behind the fake Kei ruler. Besides she was already there when she first arrived at this alternate world, and knows that Kou country is corrupt and poorly run, is that such a surprise that provincial lords are jackasses? And why would she want to meet Kou king's children anyway? Yeah she also needs to go there to find her friend, but I wonder why she needs to go alone, it just seems like a forced drama. Kou king hates her and she won't be safe in Kou, the least she can do is bring a thousand cavalry as her escort. I don't mind the massive dialogue, it's just not very engaging as a story, and Nakajima is not a very likable character. My gosh you people overhype everything, stop saying this is a great series, it's not. It's just ok.

The people saying it's a great series have seen all (most) of it (unlike you) and like fantasy anime (unlike you).
