Shinigami no Ballad

Also known as Momo, the Girl God of Death, probably better titled You're Going to Cry Like a Little Pansy.

In short, this was pretty much the most depressing first episode of a TV series I have ever seen. It's an episodic little series about a shinigami named Momo and her rather unfortunate job; as such, there's no real "plot", per se. The art is cute, in an understated (read: bland) sort of way, and the music is really lovely. I haven't liked a poppy OP song this much in forever.

Anyway, it's not bad, it's decidedly different, and it's seriously tearjerking right from the first episode. If you're a sucker for Nicholas Sparks-type tragedy or just want to watch something quiet and gentle instead of loud and fanservicey, I would give this my highest recommendation.

Anyone else watching it?

From the few synopses I read, it seemed a bit too disjointed for my interest. Granted, I haven't avidly looked for more thorough yet unspoilerific information. Your comments completely changed what I thought this one would be like... therefore! I'll check this one out after work tonight.

I like different.

I like depressing....... no, not really. But they do have an evil way of drawing me in.

Yep. That was depressing... yet strangely, the overal tone of the music contrasted everything. It was nice but it stood out a bit much.

I might've expected too much so this ep turned out a lil sappy. That's my own fault though. Had I watched this ep w/o any prior knowledge, it might've made a greater impact. Even so, the characters felt real so they drove the (utterly inevitably depressing) story along very well.

That intro song is the funkiest song I've heard in a while. A mildy upbeat, poppy rhythm with some jacked up lyrics. Twisted... but somewhat original... and very different.

This face of Mai's displays my sentiments for this series.

Yeah, it's totally saccharine and overall pretty mediocre, but it's so startlingly far from what I expected it to be that I had to sucker people into watching it bring it to attention.

I almost don't want to watch anymore, because I really don't like things that are bittersweet and tragic to the exclusion of anything else, but I'm morbidly curious now and can't stop.

Yeah, it's not easy watching something knowing it'll make me bawl like a six-year-old after getting his lollipop stolen......... by his mother.

Ok, so it's not that severe but it gets my point across.

Will I watch more? I'll refrain from answering until I undoubtedly watch the next episode.

Yeah, that ending was a bit too much for me to take. I'm pretty weak hearted when it comes to these kind of endings, so chances are I might not watch all of this.

It sure didn't help that Mai was oh so adorably cute.

I was gonna post something witty regarding the tissue comment but instead...

While I was scanning through the intro sequence for a screenshot, I noticed this (pic linked due to potential spoiler; click at your own discretion): Screenie

Seem familiar? It does so for me. Presuming what's shown in that pic is what I think it is, I wonder if this intro sequence will change each episode to match the story.

And not only that, if you pay attention to the lyrics while watching that part of the opening... it's freakishly ominous.

Geh. Now I'm all sad again. Stupid anime.

Ep 2

I was hatin' on myself for starting this ep but... by the end...

Let's just say this was a good ep. I didn't feel as much for the characters as the first ep but Momo's char was fleshed out more and that was nice. I urge anyone who's started this series to watch this one. I won't spoil anything but... it's not the same as the last.

I would've quit the series after this ep had it been different but now I'll probably watch it to the end. I wanna know more about Momo.

I really haven't noticed Momo as much as I have with the character's with a conflict. I guess I really don't care about Momo's story.

Spoiler:
Well, this episode was quite easy to take in. We didn't even get to see Asano's death.

Oh yeah, don't you guys think that the girl looks too much like Mai from episode 1? She still lives on, oh yeah!!

Episode three was just downright adorable, if completely unlike the previous two. Kantarou and Tomato need a fluffy romantic-comedy spinoff---and I hate fluffy romantic-comedies.

Looks like my original plan of "watch three episodes and then drop it" has failed, because I'm looking forward to seeing, uh, the entire rest of the series. I am quite shocked and impressed. Why, Jigoku Shoujo, why couldn't you keep my attention like this?!
