Anime will only stop when two conditions are met:

1) All anime studios go out of business or all of their artists die horrifically.
2) All American, UK, and Australian anime fans lose complete interest.

... or it changes over time into something unrecognizable to genre viewers ...

No, anime will have a longer shelf life than most other forms of visual entertainment IMO. The reason is that its fan/artist driven. Anime is so god slow to evolve, plus year after year you'll have thousands of young artists looking to get into animation (and they'll base their future stuff on what they grew up on). Anime has very 'exotic' qualities to it that I do not think the western producers will be able to reproduce very easily anytime soon.

But what Sam said is probably true. The anime we see in the west may blend with 'Disney' anime and pixar renderings plus get a bit cartoony. Anime anime though, will continue to be mecha and submissive women for quite a while. Personally I look forward to that blend. Westerners are pretty cynical and bloodthirsty so that influence can raise the maturity bar of anime titles we see. As long as its a bunch of virgin nerds holding up the market though, we're gonna continue to see some dodgy anime designed for those with an inferiority complex and poor interest in women.

I see anime like the comic industry now. There will be a million and one different things coming out that it will be hard to keep up. The only real difference between comics and Anime is that one is moving and that there are more female fans.

I wouldn't be worried, anime is a terribly popular medium and it looks like it'll continue to be one looking at things now.

Not enougth blood in the east? what about Hellsing, Berserk and Gantz.. to name a few. Compare that to marvel/DC comics although not yet influenced by Japan so much and not manga, but as it generally stands now manga has all it needs in that catagory
