Well if you want a hilarious and deliberately cheezy sci fi series I would suggest Space Pirate Mito.

Well here are a couple suggestions of GOOD anime series that no one really knows about. There not all exactly "new" but I gurantee you will enjoy them none the less:

Gokudo

This is a REALLY, really funny anime that takes a different route then most shows. The main character IS a bad guy and is just as rotten, dirty, cheap, and backstabbing as yopur average villain. It uses a wide variety of unique, comical characters and the storyline is VERY involving.

Blue Seed

An older anime but a very good one. It's got a great story and mixes all kinds of elements: comedy, fan service, horror, romance, action, sci-fi etc. There's lots of cool monsters and anime mythology mixed in as well. Plus, you got to check out the dvd extra "Omake Theater". Trust me, you'll DIE laughing.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenoashi

One of the best new anime series out there if you ask me. It's very funny and uses a wide variety of movies, animes, and TV shows to parody. It's only 13 episodes but it's a really great show with some very amusing main characters and the show NEVER gets dull, there's always something new going on with it.

King of Bandit Jing

This is a very bizarre anime and a newer, more recent one but it's definitely not a boring one. It's got a bright, colorful style of animation to it and there's lots of bizarre "alice in wonderland" type creatures, worlds, and things to see it. Again only 13 episodes, but it's a very unique anime.

I highly recommend you look into ANY of these animes, I gurantee you that you will not be disappointed with them.

Hmmm well I often am not aware of the ages of the anime I watch, however there are one or two..I assume you are refering to age of american release

FullMetal Alchemist is relatively new and exceedingly awesome.

Haibane Renmei is 3 years old, and exceedingly awesome.

Samurai 7 just released its last disk recently, its quite good.

Gilgamesh is awesome (for the most part, I didnt like the end)

Hakugei: Legend of the Moby Dick is some times a bit goofy, but still very good.

the .//hack stuff, especially SIGN is very good

Get Backers is excellent

and of course anything by Miyazaki

The closest thing on that list that is "fantasy" would be .//hack.

Technically, it's all fantasy though...

It all just depends on how you define fantasy. And on which type of fantasy you mean.

The World game in .hack is a high-fantasy type RPG...however, its an advanced video game, and the show takes place in the future so it could be called science fiction.

Fullmetal Alchemist is fantasy (although not Tolkien style "high" fantasy). Alchemy is magic (they call it a science, but it works like magic and does things only magic could do). Some might also call it borderline "steampunk."

If you wanted to put a single genre label on Haibane-Renmei, fantasy would be the closest...it has supernatural/spiritual elements.

Much of Miyazaki's work would be fantasy.

Get Backers could be considered fantasy. So could Paranoia Agent after a fashion.

Truth is, genre labels are a basic shorthand at best, often not very helpful, and at worst downright misleading, and thats when applied to standard Western stuff.

Trying to define most Anime with a single genre label is frankly pointless. Most Anime either have elements of several genres, or are totally unclassifible within the genre labels most of us think of
