As I can remember shura no toki is about a guy who lived in the same period with miyamoto mushashi, unlike mushashi this guy is specialised in hand to hand combat, wandering around the country challenging(being challenged by?) strong fighters. Sure you can argue that there are some bloodshed and there are some stupid expression, but not on the exaggerate level like the threadstarter would suggest.

Kamisama kazoku and Tsubasa chronicle has almost all of the elements in them which annoys the threadstarter, except for maybe the robots thingy.
School rumble, pretty much excels in the veins and sweatdrops department.
Haven't seen last exile .hack//root to comment on it.
Aria besides the setting on another world might actually qualify(if not for the fact that it is extremely boring).

An anime WITHOUT Robots, Magic, chibis, blood, sweatdrops, nose bleeds, insanity, vein marks...wouldn't be an anime.

Nuance to follow that proclamation...

Ok, so im so damn sick of the normal anime formula of..
insanity + Robots + magic + blood + chibis + nosebleeds + vein marks and sweatdrops = EXCELLENT!

I mean ok, one of these is alright, but all of them!
I agree in part and it isn't a problem I think limited to anime. Lots of TV/movie/video entertainment suffers from kitchen sink syndrome. A serious, poignant moment will be ruined by some asinine stupidty by The Moron of the Group. A lighthearted scene loses its appeal when characters vastly overreact to some perceived slight.

A symptom of the production team trying too hard to make everyone in the audience happy? Mere creative laziness and the preference to retread winning formulas? I dunno.

But, for those who were around during the furious "what makes anime anime?" discussions, you know about the way some people define the genre and I think a great deal of that comes from those very quirks and plot devices Voltaire mentioned.

Seems people have raised a number of examples that run contrary to your narrow definition of anime, Voltron. You could at the very least pay them a small courtesy of acknowledgment. Maybe if you took the trouble to look, you'd actually find something that fits your bill. Anime, animation itself for that matter, covers a wealth of themes and genres. Cowboy Bebop, Beserk, Wolf's Rain, Shamanic Princess to name a scant few - all adult-themed and all mostly devoid of those distracting SD expressions. Do your homework.

Did somebody mix razor blades in with your cheerios, Drani? You've been very quick to snap at people lately.

Serious? I thought that was rather mild. If there was a 'snap' in it, I didn't see it.

aww but those things are what makes anime great!!...lol...hey and you can forget the little )( that pops up on their heads when they're angry...

but i think the problem is in the genre of anime you're choosing.. those things are usually found in the comdey genres... maybe if you looked for something without comdey.. or with minimal comdey in them.

i just started watching fate stay night as well. i havnt seen any robits but i understand what your sayin. however, if you take away all of those things that you say, what exactly are you left with? reality tv?

sure, a genre can be over-done, but thats why they call it a genre.

that being said:
last exile-fantasy, but no magic, robits, or nose bleeds
rec-only one nosebleed
asuka manga daioh-so cute i think it gave me a nosebleed
noir-blood and guns, no robits
desert punk-post-apocalyptic desert world, a punked out trigun if you will... great ending (no magic or robits or nosebleeds, little blood)

if you havnt seen last exile, it might be just what your looking for.
