Vampire Hunter D
I just watched this movie from 1985. The artwork was pretty good. The story was just average -- but I guess that is because I have seen a few animes that have copied the basic premise of a vampire or part-vampire doing good, fighting his lust, etc. Vampire Hunter D was the first?
In all, Vampire Hunter D may not be one of my favorite animes, but it is entertaining.
Has anyone else seen this one?

Yeppers ... actually for its time it was pretty novel ... being one of the older classics, the genre of vampire hybrid was much smaller than it is today. This is not to say that it is totally original ... it borrowed from other sources such as the appearance of the character modeled loosely on Soloman Kane.
... but better yet, if you liked the classic version, be sure to rent the remake ... the artwork is very nice, and the characters have been tastefully updated.

It's not a remake... it's a sequel.

Ah, too right, it is the sequel ... I think the subconsious desire for a remake caused the freudian slip ... ...

Well, it depends ... the story is more sophisticated and the production values are light years ahead of the original ... IMO it does suffer a bit from being almost too melodramatic and of course, it does not have the vibrancy of originality.
... but overall, I will hazard the guess that if you liked the original, you will not be dissapointed with the sequel.

It's a classic and it deserves that. The sequel was good.

I didn't like the original movie all that much as Manga Video's dialogue in the dub was bloody awful. I prefer the sequel by Madhouse; the artwork & animation is better (to be expected really as there are 15 years between the two movies), & the fact that I saw it subbed helped loads too.

I only watched part of Vampire Hunter D in the English dub. I watched it all in the original Japanese with subtitles. I agree the English dub was terrible. The voices did not fit. But the Japanese voices were very good.
I would like to see the sequel. Where can I find it. Netflix does not carry it.
