Thumbs up Samurai Seven

I've only completed disc 1, episodes 1-4. But I like what I see so far.

Samurai Seven is based on Akira Kurosawa's film Seven Samurai. Overlook the spaceships and mechanical samurais, and a few extra sub-plots, the series does remain faithful to Kurosawa's original story -- at least more so than Kaze No Yojimbo.

Unfortunately, disc 2 from Netflix was damaged, and there is a bit of a wait for disc 3. So I might not finish this series for a while.

It's a pretty good series...but I don't think that Seven Samurai needed to be made into an anime, especially mixing mecha and samurai...it made the whole thing seem a little corny.Other than that, I thought it was good; the characters were all diverse and fairly well-developed.

The only other caveat I would give to a potential viewer is that you won't be surprised by the anime if you have seen the movie; although I think that the anime series could be a good stepping stone into Kurosawa's work if someone hasn't seen any of it before.

Yeah, it's something of a Seven Samurai Steampunk...

I finished disc 4. Now it seems the series will move away from the original Kurosawa movie. Still, it is a good series. It has action, drama, romance, comedy and tragedy. One thing I don't like is the actress who does the voice of Okara in the English dub. She sounds more like a grown woman than a little girl.

There are three more discs to go.
