Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist)

Well, this series is currently airing in Japan, and almost simultaneously (i.e. a few days later) on Viz's anime streaming page. I've really been enjoying the manga for this series so far, and I caught the first episode of the anime a few days ago. So far it's looking to shape up to be pretty good, as long as it doesn't go downhill like most series do!

So I thought it'd be fun to post about it as the episodes come out. Hopefully there'll be a few other people here who pick it up, because otherwise it'll just be me chatting about it with myself!

Summary
Rin lives with his twin brother Yukio in a church under the care of a Father Shirou. Rin's an ordinary 15-year-old kid, except that he causes nothing but trouble wherever he goes, frequently gets into fights, and only finished his compulsory middle school education with no plans to go to high school. His brother Yukio, on the other hand, is a genius who intends to become a doctor. Life's not looking too good for Rin right now... and then one day he starts seeing demons everywhere and Father Shirou shares some shocking secrets.

Episode #1
Spoiler:
So, the premise sounds just like any other "boy suddenly discovers he has ungodly powers" series, but the execution in just this first episode alone is pretty sharp. Animation looks great, and character designs are lifted right out of the manga and look nice on the screen.

I love the attention to detail and the way that the focus is on the characters rather than the ungodly powers. Rin comes across believably as a character struggling to become a better person, and yet constantly failing even though he has the best of intentions. The supporting characters are surprisingly endearing, too, from straight-laced Yukio to the "tough love" Father Shirou, and even including the nameless extras populating the church who try to encourage Rin. This focus was something that the manga has too, so I'm hoping it'll continue throughout the rest of the series.

The manga is really compelling and very enjoyable, and the first episode of the anime was too. I'm looking forward to Episode #2.

I've watched first 2 eps, still not impressed, there is atleast some acceptance to his fate instead whining and crying about it. I'm giving it 2 more eps before deciding to drop it or not.

Episode #2
Spoiler:
So, hmmm... episode 2 didn't impress me as much, mostly because of the filler required to pad out the length of the episode.

The resurgence of Shiratori-demon never occurred in the manga, so it was disappointing to see almost the whole episode wasted on his character when I knew all along his was a bit role. I guess it's just one way of getting to where they needed to get to, but I think the way they chose kind of lost all the urgency and the confusion from the manga. I thought one of the most brilliant aspects from the manga was the way they literally threw Rin into the situation, with no explanations. His verbal explosion at the Father is a lot more understandable in the manga, because he's dragged home, his stuff is shoved into his hands, and he's told to get out. His reaction is a lot more believable than it is in the anime; after all, when all the people he's known are being beaten up left and right as they were in the anime, you'd think it'd be easy to grasp that his presence is a danger and thus it's better for him to move to a safer location....

Also, the exorcists lying around during Satan's appearance were rather annoying and a blatant pandering to the people without the attention to understand what was going on, since they were obviously just there to explain the situation to the viewers. I'm not typically a person to like gore in anime, but I found myself wishing they'd been burnt into char by Satan's fire, as added reminders of the danger of the situation. It was rather silly to see them sitting up and talking, as though they'd just received exfoliating scrubs instead of hellfire to the face. But clearly this anime was slotted for a younger demographic than it deserves, considering they couldn't even show Satan ripping the Father's fingers off for the blood to form the Gehenna Gate....

But gripes aside, I liked from Satan's appearance onwards. I'm looking forward to the next episode, but I'm still hoping not to see any more filler stuffed in.

C-money is still just ok, I just hate the part where they have to partner up with some silly monster to do battle, that theme is been done to death already. Just wondering when they're gonna grow some balls and stop depending on mythical creatures that don't exist, to do their dirty work for them, individuality is being brutally murdered at such a young age.

3-6:

Spoiler:
Well, I find myself liking the completely filler, off-topic episode more than the ones that follow the manga plotline. I guess it's because I love the manga's presentation so much, and for some reason the anime doesn't hit the same notes with me. That's the problem of seeing the anime adaptation of a beloved manga, though. It'll rarely be the same.

I'm still enjoying this, though, and the next episode should be fun. At least it's still a fun diversion, even if the series lacks the emotional kick in the gut that makes the manga so good.

It seems a bit weird that nobody notice a demon running a school that specialise in hunting demons?

LOL, you're right. Pointy ears are kind of a dead giveaway. Even the manga hasn't reached far enough to explain it, or at least I haven't read far enough. Although I think the Father watching Rin and Yukio knew about him, so there's got to be some kind of reason why he's in charge.
