Unhappy Le Portrait de Petite Cossette

Le Portrait de Petite Cossette is a three episode series, although the episodes run almost 40 minutes each.

Eire is a college student who works in an antique shop. He comes across the spirit of Cossette, a young girl who was murdered 250 years ago. Cossette’s spirit wants to be set free. Eire, falling in love with the girl, agrees to help her although he may pay the ultimate price.

The series has some good artwork to go with an interesting storyline. But there are problems. The unconventional narrative style gets in the way of the story. There is no sense of emotion or apprehension as style overshadows the plot.

There are some other women in Eire’s life, but outside of being told one is in love with him, we know little about these characters and how they fit into Eire’s life.

In the final episodes, things just suddenly happen without explanation. It seems that the plot is being pulled in multiple directions and we don’t know why.

This series could have been better if they would have made it longer, taken more time for the plot to develop, and let us get to know the characters better. Le Portait de Petite Cossette had the potential of being a pretty good ghost story and a touching love story, but it falls short.
