A Poem: “From Above”
He came from the light,
He came from above,
Hair of the night,
Wings of a dove,
He blinded my sight,
My angel of love.
~Hitomi
Hitomi gazed at her small leather coded journal and let her fingertips tease the soft cover. She sighed inwardly thinking about all the pages she had filled using pen after pen until they went dry. She would write about her daily events and fond memories. Hitomi loved her beautiful journal and used it daily but lately it seemed like the blank pages in the back were doomed to stay empty. She slid the journal into a nearby drawer and proceeded to think about the remainder of her morning.
Another boring day of class was aproching. Hitomi dreaded the thought of Mr. Yue giving another one of those damn lectures in Biology. “Why must every day be so repetitive!? Nothing exciting ever happens here…” Hitomi let out a delicate moan and played with a beautiful pendant that was latched loosely around her graceful neck. It was gorgeous, a stone that hung in a teardrop shape with the color of fire. She held it up to the sun’s bright light and watched it dances across the precious jewel like a goddess on wings. Hitomi remember the birthday she received her the wonderful airloom and she also remembered that day when tragedy struck.
~Flashback~
It was an early Saturday morning. Hitomi had just turned five and was playing with her new birthday toys. Her play was filled with contentment until she heard the sounds of sharp sobbing fill the downstairs kitchen.
“Mamma, what’s wrong?” Hitomi begged to her crying mother. Her mother took the small child in her arms and embraced her tightly. “Hitomi, I- I’ve just received a call from your aunt Maaya… Your grandmother has passed.” Tears filled her mothers eyes as she watched the little girl in her arms start to tremble. “Grandma…” She whispered into her mothers shoulder.
~End Flashback~
The walk to school was an aggravating two miles of loud traffic brash strangers and of course… the upper class men. Hitomi being a 16-year-old sophomore was an easy target for their harsh tactics and wild behavior. Although she had to watch out for the upper class men, in her own grade she was considered a very likable person.
Hitomi was the kinda girl that everyone was friends with. She was always pleasant, funny and courdious. Her good looks and athleticism put her on top according to the men at her school. Hitomi had a look about her that made all of the girls envious. She was tall and had a model figure. Her eyes were like two deep pools of emerald green jewels. Hitomi’s hair was short but added to her likable personality and her smile lit up the darkest of rooms.
As hitomi set out on her long and incredibly annoying journey, she was met by her usual walking partner and best friend Yukari. “Here she comes!” Hitomi thought to herself as Yukari ran aimlessly towards her friend. “HEY HITOMI!!!” Yukaria waved as Hitomi just smiled at her blankly.
“Uh Yuk… could you maybe not do what you just then?” Hitomi’s eyes turned away from her now heavily breathing friend.
“What do you mean Hitomi?”
“Well the thing is… you kinda embarrass me when you run up like that.” Htomi turned back to notice her friend blushing profusely.
“Oh ahhh… sorry if I did anything to stress you out Hitomi. I guess it would be kinda embarrassing with the upperclassmen watching and all.” Hitomi noticed her friend’s discomfiture and decided what she said wasn’t so pleasant.
“OHHH YUKARI! I still love ya!”
Hitomi grabbed her friend by the arm and pushed her forward. Yukari giggled and the two girls started their endless walk down the cold cement.
Hitomi gazed at Yukari. She was so innocent like a breakable doll. Hitomi thought she was cute like the kid of girl you mother loves and wants you to be like. Her hair was in neat red ringlets pulled behind her small ears. She was extremely pheable and her height of 5’1 was nothing compared to Hitomi’s tall but graceful 5’7.
“Hitomi!” Yukari snapped.
“Ah yeah… what is it?” Hitomi jerked out of her daze.
“Oh nothing, it just looked like you were lost for a while that’s all.”
“Nah… I was just thinking…” Hitomi smiled and continued walking forward.
Yukari went on rambling as usual. “About today Hitomi… you don’t seem the least excited about the track meet? I can’t wait to watch you run!” Hitomi just walked faster trying to avoiding the subject. She had been the fastest runner since her freshmen year. It seemed like every time she raced race, it was won with immense speed and triumph. Win after win, her status grew and grew. Soon Hitomi had become West Tokyo High’s best female athlete. Lately though Hitomi’s running just hadn’t been as wonderful as it used to be.
“Well Hitomi”? Yukari asked again this time with annoyance in her voice.
“Sure” Hitomi answered simply.
Yukari gave her friend a playful smack on the back thrusting her forward. “
“Come on Hitomi… let get walking! Can’t be late for Mr. Yue’s lecture now can we?” Hitomi shoot her a sarcastic grin… “OH NO! I wouldn’t miss it for the world!”
Eventually the two girls reached a particularly burst crossroad. Hitomi stepped out onto the tall curve and eyed the speeding cars as they passed by in all directions. She gazed up at the dead crosswalk sign that didn’t want to change.
“Yukari, im going to try and make it… stay here if you want.”
Yukari decided it would be safest to wait for the sign to change for pedestrians and cross then. Hitomi turned her head in both directions of the traffic.
“It appears to be clear…” she thought to herself.
She drew in one final breath and made a mad dash into across the hectic street. Her pace was swift… she swirved through the speeding vechicals one by one.
“Almost there” she thought to herself… but her simple self thought was cut short. It only took a millisecond for a small car to clip Hitomi’s side and only a breath for silence to fall over her soul. Everything was still and all was dark.
