Neojin's overview of ACEN2k2

Ahh..where to start.

Friday: I get to the Hotel around Noon and am just totaly overwhelmed by the mass of people. (WAY more than last year) Thus even though I pre-reged the line I was in was quite long..probably a good 20min wait, not bad though really.

While in line I bumped into a gal friend I met last year. (which is good cus I was roomless friend bumed out on our room at last min) Told her I'd catch up with her later. After I got my tag I went and explored a little bit, cosplay was light and nothing really grabed my attention. But as the day went on I started to see some really good cosplay. (Pictures later when developed )

I finaly made it to the Merchandise Hall, and cruised the area freely...I should of Picked up the Love Hina DVD 2 while I was there, I bought the Boxed set...and I guess that number 2 sold out on Friday, the first day...doh! Heres a list of my purchases while I was there:

Love Hina #1 w/collector box
Tenchi Wall scroll
Inuyasha Plushies
Pair of Kick arse Daggers from Weapon dealer (Nice new addition to ACEN)
Bible Black DVD
Kite: Director's Cut
and...A box of POCKY!!! (little bit of overused ACEN humor there incase ya didn't get it.)

I was very picky about my purchases, just about everything I bought was cheaper than what I could have got normaly..which was a surprise...especialy House of Anime, they were at least 5-10 bucks cheaper than their web prices. (where I got Plushies at)

The rest of Friday I mostly hung out in the game room before it was infested with B.O. and tournaments...then I met back up with my Lady friend. OH, almost forgot, I seen the Infamous Cloakactive finaly...was a dead give away with that description he gave Too bad I didn't meet up with Captain and Megumi Girl.

Saturday: Well after a slow start on Friday, I hit the scheduled events and massive lines for Live Programming which included:

Tiffany Grant
Hilary Haag
Toshihiro Kawamoto
and
Ken Akamatsu

I grabed a nice meal and met this gal at the bar...she wanted to relax because her friends were cosplaying and dragging her all over, so I suggested one of the Anime rooms. We ended up seeing volumes 3-5 of Vampire Princess Miyu, it was really kewl...I have never seen it before and must say although some of the "Demon Spirits" (Sinjiahs? or sumthing) were alittle corney, and all the fights lasted like 2 minutes, the moral meanings behind each episode were really good...and also I made a new friend in the process ^_~

So, stag again I went to the purchasing room (not all purchases were made on friday, i just listed them all there) they had a line now, which was weird..some fire code I guess, they were having too many people in there...which wasnt bad cus when I went friday it was hell to get around.

Went to the Mens Health club and worked out...ate dinner, then braved the MASSIVE ACen Masquerade line.

Frank if your listening, this is my only and major complaint about the arrangment this year. Planning and staffing for the arrangment of that many people was poor to say the least. I know its hard to set up lines with that many people in that small of space...but I would of thought that lines would have been set up before hand, or some kind of, one door only entrance. People were clogged up for sometime...they had to line them up outside to set up the lines.

Also, the Ballroom just is not made for "viewing pleasure", meaning every seat was a bad seat unless you were 7 feet tall. I'm not short by no means but the stage just was not high enough. I missed ALOT of the Cosplay, people had to move around adjust...I was lucky enough to catch quite abit of it on someones camcorder while I was there (bless those LCD screens).

In short...the Hotel rocked as far as accomodations, but I felt last year was better as far as the setup of the Main Live Programming Hall.

One more thing...TOO MUCH COSPLAY! I know, it takes alot of guts for people to get up there, and do their thing...but I just think that it needs to be cut alittle bit, you get to a point where your hoping that the next one is the last one. They should almost have private auditions to be in the main mascarade... /shrug

The dance was..the dance as usual. I always have fun at dances There were even some kick arse breakdancers this year...its fun to watch at first, but then it just takes up room and people stop dancing I only stayed till 2, I wanted to say good bye to some of the peeps I had met, I actualy left out at 2:30 back to Indiana...I was wired and I really did not want to wake up in the morning and get around, I figured it would be much easier for me to stay away and just drive all night.

I did have a blast, and the Acon definatly renewed a sense of anime spirit in me...and I think thats really the best thing I got from the Convention. In general they are too expensive, not ACEN's fault, but a product of conventions in general...I think if I do go to ACEN again, it would be for Saturday only...it might even be fun to cosplay, but I wouldnt want to do it unless I got into the character really good, AND did it well.

Overall...a GREAT experience, and I think we were really lucky to have such great guests and content.

LOVE AND PEACE!!

Hey Neo,

I'm glad you enjoyed ACen for the most part. Everyone worked really hard and it seems that the numbers seem to reflect anime fans' growing faith in us (4500+ for the weekend - woo!).

Just to give you an insider note for a second. It wasn't just fans that were dissatisfied with the line arrangement to get people into the Masquerade. The Reg. crew and I decided to help out in line control, and as people whose specialty is partly to arrange and run lines, we too disagree with how it was done (though I didn't feel it was my place to order it changed). One of the -major- points that I will be bringing up at our annual post-ACen staff BBQ is logistics running that line. I humbly apologize for it and that I will definitely push for an easier, less painful system.

Yep, lines were on the long side, but it was definitely amazing seeing how many people showed up. Staff increases will be forthcoming in my department (hopefully) in order to make the lines go a little faster.

I got to meet Black_Knight, but no one else...though I felt bad when an attendee found a badge...and it happened to be cloakactive's. I had to turn it into Con Ops.

Yea, that was my badge. Frank... turns out we have mutual friends. You might know Baerish aka BakaOrochi (June). As for you turning it into ops... thanks. My friend Jon was working and he told me that they had it. That was much appreciated.

All i can really say is that this weekend was CRAZY! The auction for the Guest Art works was INSANE!

All I know is that anyone and everyone that I met was really awesome, I just felt really bad b/c I was stretched thin with all the groups of people i was meeting up with. I didn't have much of a chance to sit down and what not.

Overall it was awesome meeting Neojin and Bomberman00004. Too bad I didn't meet Black_Knight. =\

I had a great time this weekend, even though I didn't meet up with anyone from AB. It was my first time coming to ACen and It was better than I expected! My only gripes were some of the video rooms were off schedule at times and the masquerade line was a pain in the ass. The moment I saw that line, I said 'F*ck it!" so I didn't watch it.

Friday, I would say was kind of a bad day for me... I got into a car accident on the way to the con and my car got the worst damage compared to the other guy's car. That pretty much ruined my day and I was pretty much pissed. When we got there, my brother was like "These cosplayers are freaky!!!" After I got my badge, I stayed at the exhibit hall until they closed and the rest of the day, I was either at the video rooms watching some anime, in the main programming watching whatever they were showing or in the game room.

Saturday: I bought some DVD's, got a t-shirt, a CD and a cell. Hmm... I can't remember what other random crap I did. I did get annoyed by my group calling me on my cell asking about meeting up or where I was since we split up a lot. Then I spent some time at the main ballroom after the masquerade(which I didn't watch) listening to music and dancing a little.

Sunday: Never expected to come this day, but I was talked into it. All I did was look around in the exhibit hall one last time, watched what was left of Iron Guest and stayed for the closing ceremonies.

After this experience, I do plan on coming back next year.

Friday: I arrived around 8 on Friday due to a late flight, grr. I didn't really do anything except try to find megumi and watch some videos sans badge. Finally found her and a friend and got their crap in my hotel room. I was pretty tired since thta whole week, I didn't get a lot of sleep due to tests and papers. Thus being so, I went to sleep around 11.

Saturday: Got up around 7 and got in the pre-reg line around 7:30. Liked the Love Hina badge a lot. Went to the Kawamoto and Akamatsu panels. My heart filled with joy when I got Ken's signature. Then it was filled with sorrow when I wasn't picked in the raffle. Watched some anime and some main events. Looked at the art room, but was disappointed by the quantity.

Sunday: Nothing much here. Got excited when I heard they were auctioning off the Love Hina sketches. I tempted fate by waiting until the last minute to leave for my plane. That auction was awesome. If I just had more money and time...

I only bought an ACEN tshirt surprisingly. I also only ate two meals during my whole time there I'll probably go again. Especially if Ken comes back. Come back Akamatsu-sensei!!! Oh well, I'm looking forward to Otakon now.

Thumbs up Pro and Cons of the con

Just to get the high drama out of the way, The con was by far the best ACEN so far.

I hope Frank and the crew are ready, next year, they're looking at between 5000-7000 con goers.
Fox news did a piece on the con and I met one of our photogs out there too, so ACEN IS known to the local media.

I REALLY enjoyed the guest forums and have become a HUGE fan of Fan-Parodies (God some of that stuff is soooo!!!! funny)

The Art Show was alittle thin this year. VERY few pieces of fanart were displayed, I was alittle disappointed, but I lived. And some of the ones there were REALLY GOOD!!!
A couple of the Artists complained about the handling of artist alley, and the problems with the lines interfering with them. Alittle annoying but that was the best they could do.

My 3 model kits were a minor hit with a few offers for sales (I didn't offer any for sale this year.) The best of all, none of them got broken this time!!!! (YEAH!!!!)

The suckyest part this year, (Besides the expected 10%, (rude con goers) was the "slaughter house" approach to who gets in to see the costume show. Man, that was worse than having a tooth pulled, without annestetic, and FROM THE INSIDE!!!

I tried 3 times, then gave up. typically, a main hall should accomidate everybody at the con, Maybe they should consider the convention center across the street next year. That way, everybody can get in, and not just those lucky (or well connected.) I'd prefer to see the con rather than stand in ANOTHER line for hours.

I have to really commend the cosplayers this year. There were some GREAT costumes. Sure there were some really bad costumes and a couple of 600lbs. senshi, but there were some really cute CCS, (Naughty Sakura mooning your friends like that ) and SM cosplayers. I felt pretty bad for one Sailor Mars cosplayers... I could tell that her feet were killing her.

And a couple of AMAZING A!MG costumes. Ken seemed to like them too!!

There were a couple of Vash players that were AWESOME. (One of them decided to entertain himself by dropping stuff from one of the walkways..... idiot)

But the most, by far seemed to be Love Hina coslpayers, there must have been 30 of em...

I only saw 1 NGE player... And no MECHS!!!!! BUMMER!!!!!

Kudos to Frank!!!!! Registration, seemed to go pretty smoothly and pre-regs was light-years beyond last year.
It looks like everybody had a great time.

TFC

No problem. Yeah, I've known June since liek high school, so must be a small world. I noticed your last name...you wouldn't happen to have a little sister would you? If so, what's her name? I seem to recall knowing someone with that last name back in high school....but maybe it's just coincidence...

I'm glad you got the badge back. And yes, the auction was nuts. Argh...$2.1k for that one Akamatsu sketch...that would have cleaned me out.

BTW, if you check out the first page of Friday cosplayers, I actually made it into a pic....

Check the very last one on the page (lower right). That's me in the background in the Anime Central hockey jersey and red pants trying to hear my radio over all the noise.
