How can Ranma eat so many Okonomiyakis?

After watching a lot of Ranma 1/2 I realized I've never eaten most of the food they eat there (Ramen, Pork Buns, Takoyaki...), and it made me curious about how those things taste, especially Okonomiyaki.
And since I've never seen any resteraunt in Israel that had this kind of food, I decided to make it myself.
So I found an Okonomiyaki recipe on the net and yesterday I tried to make me one.

It went pretty well and wasn't that hard to make, but when I tasted it it was too 'dowy' and very stuffing. I couldn't eat even a quarter of what I made ...

Now I wonder if I went wrong somewhere or is Okonomiyaki really that way. 'cause if so, it's really strange that Ranma can eat so many okonomiyakis...

Well, considering he "takes 5 ton boulders to his head for breakfast", you can safely assume he has other superhuman abilites.

he's in the growing age, fights constantly, gets beaten up by Akane..that requires a lot of energy. And it's not like we haven't seen people gobble down incredible amounts of food before in anime.

Perhaps it's becasue Ukyo made it. She's about the only one he can trust with food preparation outside of Katsumi...

I'm not a good cook...

Anyone here has ever tasted Okonomiyaki anyway?

I make okonomiyaki ( pronounced o-ko-no-mi-ya-ki) too during the winter months. It's lots of fun. I am working on a lighter, less filling recipie. If I ever am happy with it, I'll share it here.

I tried again today and it came out much better
I used about half of the ingridients (150gr flour instead of 300gr and two instead of 4 cabage leaves for example...) so it was flatter and the dow fried a bit better...
I ate it with honey and it was pretty good.
I even managed to eat most of it.

It still was 'stuffing' though...

Okonomiyaki suggestions

(1) The sauce. At Asian food stores, you can pick up some okonomiyaki sauce. It's OK. It's not trivial to make your own (time & ingredients). You can make a substitute with Chinese hoisin sauce as a base with other stuff added (like soy sauce, ketchup, hot sauce, salsa...)

(2) The griddle
This is my secret to good results. Cooking shops have special extra thick griddle pans. It's not a frying pan, so the raised edge isn't there to interfere with turning it. The extra thick part uniformly spreads the heat about for consistency. Also great for pancakes and eggs!

Thanks again!

Though I don't think I'll get a griddle pan.
It's actually quite easy to flip it since it has dow in it and it's not too thin.
And as for the Okonomiyaki sauce. I don't think I'll get that either, since I don't know of any Asian food stores around... Right now I'm using only soy sauce.

btw
What's your recipie?

Mine (for the basic Okonomiyaki) is
4 large cabbage leaves, cut in thin stripes
2 eggs
300gr flour
210ml water
all mixed together and then poured on the frying pan...

Last time I used about half of what I just wrote and added some soy sauce before the frying...

You'd never tried Ramen? wow....

Anyhoo, Ranma is the master of all martial arts, and he did had a lil French Cuisine Contesting thingy....but that hardly involves eating anything...heh...Ranma is Really something...

Anyhoo, these Oko treats....

A Japanese stores sells this one package that has everything, just add water, and put it in a frying pan, and boom, an oko. treat! Costs like $12 a box.

I tried to make an one...not knowing what to put in it...I just put egg, flour, and noodles....whee....

I love ramen noodles, but I have never had okonomiyaki. Sounds good though, I'll have to try your recipe sometime.

Someone mentioned pork buns earlier, which sounds interesting. I'm a vegetarian though, so I'll just continue to think it "sounds interesting"! I've heard they have a lot of different kinds of bread in Japan. Anyone tried any?

I also hear that the rice in Japan is different than in other countries, such as the white rice in the U.S. (Also, that it's incredibly expensive!) Anyone ever try Japanese rice??

Talking about all these foods make me hungry!

Anyhoo, they're making pork subsitute at this one resturant, basically, Tofu buns, yummy, eh?

And yup, I tried Japanese Rice before, has a unique aroma to it, I'm used to Jasmine rice...anyhoo...

MMMMmmmmm. I'm getting very hungry now. I might try to make some okonomiyaki myself. Or that could end up like Akane's cooking....do Japanese restaurants serve it? Or is it served at more of a food-stand type of place?
