Perfect Collection video quality

I am looking to buy the Eva Perfect Collection, but came across a discouraging opinion. Maybe someone can elaborate on this ...

"However, I do have a major complain with the video transfer. ADV didn't do justice on it. The images are a little blurry ..."

I am serious about getting started with Eva, but this has me worried.

Also, I read that the 1st DVD was remastered. Why? And why were the other 7 *not* remastered?

Well, a little web searching seems to indicate that disk 1 was remastered because it originally had mastering problems. Presumably the other disks weren't remastered because they didn't have the same problems originally. As for the image quality, I haven't watched the series yet so I can't say much. I do have the Perfect Collection thought and all I can tell you right now is that I put in disk 1 just now and viewed episode 1's opening and a (very) little bit of the opening and the animation doesn't look blurry to me. Perhaps that reviewer had an original disk 1 with the mastering problems and that's why the images were blurry for him/her?

Stupid aside: I really don't like the style DVD holder for these disks -- it's like a flower thing where you have to shove down a center circle pretty hard in order to move the petal like holders in far enough to pop the disk out. Other DVDs I bought had much easier to open disk holders. I'm new to DVDs so I don't know what the different types are called, but I know I don't like this closure, too hard to open.

Whoa! Two different versions of Perfect Collection? That does sound like anime alright!

The person I stole this quote from looked like they really knew what they were talking about (probably from this board). He/she did indicate they saw all 26 episodes ...

I've got the Perfect Collection, and I've no complaints about the image quality.

Phew, that's good to hear!!!

This means that ADV won't be releasing a newer version, ever.

(since there doesn't appear to be a reason)

I'd hope the person writing the review basically knew what he/she was talking about. Something to consider -- if that's the only review you saw with a complaint about the image quality, there might be something singular about that person's tastes/preferences that the vast majority of people don't share. People are different. Maybe that reviewer is picking up on something so minor that most people won't notice it. Or maybe he/she got the collectiong with an old disk 1 with mastering problems and was complaining about that. *shrug* Unless you can contact the reviewer to find out, you may never know exactly why that comment was made. As noted, the little bit I watched last night just to check looked OK to me. And if all the other reviews make no complaint about video quality, I don't think I'd worry about it.

I thought the first DVD for the boxset was 're-mastered' to remove all the English alterations that ADV had put on when the series was first released on DVD format (i.e., a lot o the signs were in English., etc)..., ADV got a lot of complaints about it apparently.., so they corrected it (i.e., restored the original Japanese signs, etc) for the boxset collection...,

Maybe you're rght, EVA fiend. I did a little more searching and found this: "As a special bonus, the volume 1 DVD included in this set is a remastered version featuring improved image quality and restored footage free from digital editing so you get to see the animation exactly the way its Japanese creators wanted it to be seen." The first web page I found that said something about why the remastering was done (and not just that it was done) only said there were mastering problems with the original. Maybe they did correct other edits like you said, too.

The visuals were fine, but for awhile there I noticed the screen "jumping."

Peace. V

I hate the image quality on ADV's DVDs. It's blurry, faded, and just overall bad. And they have a REAL bad problem with fading afterimages between frames ( areally big pain when trying to take screenshots). Manga's are better, but not by much. I'll definitely be getting the remastered Japanese DVDs when they come out.

felineki, if you were to compare the video quality of the NGE Perfect Collection to ADV's BGC 2040 (individual DVDs, not the collection), what would you say?

This'll break the tie ...

I own the Perfect Collection and the #400 Aluminum Collector's laser box

VCD's Subtitled in english

Hong kong DVD's with Director's cuts...

All of them are the quality you would expect from a 1996 anime.

You won't be seeing OVA quality screenshots from any of these.

Buy the Perfect collection

Lol...

Here's a secret you might like...

On the remastered DVD #1 I have I know that if you click on

EXTRAS on the main menu

Then on EVANGELION on the EXTRAS menu

It plays a Creditless Opening ...

If you wished it didn't have all those words scrolling over the opening scenes you can watch it this way.

Eva TV doesn't have terrific graphics... But the graphics is not the reason I love eva.
