Which side of the car?

I noticed a while ago, watching GITS:SAC, that Japanese drive on the left side of the road (same as the UK).

I watched Spirited Away recently and saw the same thing - with a twist. Chihiro's father is driving on the left side of the road, and sitting on the left side of the car! Can that be right? Near the start of the movie he even leans out the left window to shout as he drives up to the tunnel.

This doesn't match with, say, Catgirl Nuku Nuku where papa-san is driving from the right seat.

Do the Japanese normally have cars with the steering wheel on the left, so the driver is nearest the kerb? Or am I just nit-picking because I am bored at work?

If the car is an american import then yes, he will be on the curb side, it is called a left-hand drive

And you need to have the car marked as such.

Normally if you drive on the left then the driver is on the right side of the car though.

The car looked a lot like an Audi and many web reviews mention it as well. So it may be an American import, though I don't know if German Audis are right-hand drive.

I know tht's a requirement for LHD cars in Australia from about 1960 and newer, but i don't know if that applys to Japan

I don't believe so. Mainland Europe drive on the right hand side
