How slowly?
Listed read speeds are only peak (with the exception of the TruX drives, which come close).

What O/S you using?

Depending on O/S, go into Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager --> DVDROM/CDROM Drives and ensure you have DMA enabled for both of them.

You may need to go to the IDE ATA/Atapi Controllers bit and make sure you have the primary or secondary controller (depending which one has your cdrom and dvd on it) set to "DMA if available" (in WinXP).

WhatI'm getting at is, you may have both drives running in PIO Mode, which chews up CPU cycles and has a max throughput of 16MBps. Bascially, it's old tech and it's ---- slow.

Windows 95/98/ME drivers are incompatible with 2k, you're going to have to find your modems manufacturers website and hope that there are some Windows 2000 Drivers about.

I suggest you search around for your modem's driver here; www.driverzone.com <- it got a nice collection of links to manufacturers driver pages and also driver archives.
