New comp - need graphics card

I used to be a hard gamer until recent games came out. My comp couldn't handle it.

well I'm getting a new computer, using a small budget of ~$500

Would anyone suggest a graphics card that runs about $150? I know it won't be the BEST , especially for games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

I tried comparing the GeForce 5200 Ultra to Radeon 9600 Pro but I still havn't an idea which to get. Any other suggested cards would be nice, too.
Thanks.

Well , this is the situation : nvidia is cooperating with ID software , and ATI with Valve. But from the test I've seen it's clearly stated that the Radeon 9600 is the better card. my personal opinion is that ATI sucks at driversupport though.

Wonder when this'll get moved to Computer > Hardware?

If you want to spend ~$150, then go online and look for a GeForce 4 Ti 4200. Even though they're pricey, the new FX cards are "Poor Man's" GeForce cards, because they don't really even use the GF4 architecture. A Ti4200 can still beat all but the top of the line FX cards in the benchmarks.

You know I thought the same way when I bought my 9700 Pro but ATI has really turned it around. Their drivers support is great now.
