Ghost in the Shell, followed shortly afterwards by Ninja Scroll. Ironically when I first started buying anime DVDs that was pretty much the selection.

Hmm..., I think the first anime DVD I bought was the original Bubblegum Crisis boxset..., it had very shoddy packaging.., three disks in clear plain jewel cases.., all in a cardboard box the size of old PC game boxes..., very poor indeed...,

are you sure it eas'nt a bootleg? that sounds like classic HK coverings. HK's are usally just cardboard covers with bits of hsoddy plastic holders that have been poorly glued in.

No, I've got it too. It's the original AnimEigo release (I think they are going to re-release it "soon").

it was rereleased a couple of years ago i think.

I got the set last year, and it was in the new packaging (normal DVD cases, in a box)

I know. if was just after I saw Evangelion on SBS I would look around Kmart and Target to see what Anime I could buy and these were it (Pokemon doesn't count). I was going to buy them but I had seen them quite a few times. But when Evangelion came out on DVD, I couldn't refuse. I could never find Evangelion 0:1 for weeks and 0:2 have come out. So by the time I found them I brought them both at the same time.

Or

Neon Genesis Evangelion 0:1 and 0:2

Nah.., AnimEigo's original DVD release of the BGC OAV's did come in a poxy cardboard box...,

As for your assessment of crappy bootleg packaging..., bootlegs vary in quality a great deal..., some are bad as you have described.., but I have a small pile of HK bootlegs that would astound you in terms of the quality of the packaging..., my boxset of Record of Lodoss War - Heroic Knight looks far better IMO than the US release of the series...,

I actually have to think back on my first anime DVD. I believe it was back in 1996. (That's when everybody was like, "what's a DVD?") DVD's were new so there wasn't that many great things to buy. I purchased Vampire Hunter D.
