So why now after all this time? *UK related*

The UK fell into a timelapse when it came to the availabilty of anime on DVD or in general but within this year there has been a huge resurgence in the availabilty of titles and now all of a sudden even the hot new titles like Noir, Full Metal Panic, Gasaraki to the great but smaller named titles of Ah My Goddess the movie, Excel Saga, Vampire Princess Miyu etc. are being given DVD overhaula and being massed release to the UK public.

Some of these haven't even finished being released in the US. So what gives? Why now after such a long abscence?

Spirited Away was not a factor (Too late a release) beither was Princess Mononoke (Not very popular) I see no reason why now of all times.

I won't complain, i'm ecstatic it's great that i can browse through a bigger, if still small, selection of anime DVD titles but I just don't see the catalyst in all this.

I guess someone decided to give it a second go, see if it was possible to earn money on translating and selling anime. Hopefully it'll turn out that it is: That way the avaiablity of anime will increase, which I'd like to think is a good thing.

i think it's largely down to ADV, Madman, the Sci-fi channel (and to a lesser extent MVM and possibly Manga) and the fact that their is no longer the need to do 2 versions of every title (Subbed and dubbed sold seperately).

I think ADV and Madman teamed up to share the mastering costs of PAL titles, this meant that ADV could re-enter the U.K. market with a lower cost/risk if it didn't do well (even a saving of just a couple of thousand reduces the break even point dramatically).

Combine that with the fact that they are making full use of Sci-Fi for advertising their releases (the recent pattern has been for Sci-fi to show ADV titles 1-6 months prior to them being released on DVD).

Also the fact that current "new" releases in the U.K. are not having to have the dubs/subs done specifically for the U.K. - most are using the sub and dub from the U.S. releases, which is a dramatic saving (if you look at a lot of the titles from the 90's there were sometimes 2 dubs, one done for the U.K. and one for the U.S. - examples being 3x3 eyes and Battle Angel Alita)

And finally, the fact that it's been nearly 10 years since the "All anime is japanese porn" fiasco led by The Daily Mail with support from Manga*, and the manner in which Anime had become more accepted as people have become more aware of it through titles such as Digimon and Pokemon etc.

Basically it's a combination of things, but i suspect the biggest one is the reduced costs to enter the market in the U.K. now.
It costs a lot less to master/replicate 1 DVD version with both sub and dub than it does to produce 2 VHS versions (and when you share mastering costs with a company in another market you reduce the costs even more).

*From memory Manga did their best to keep the image of Anime as adult and controversial (by licencing violent titles, deliberately dubbing things with more swearing etc)

I think it's about bloody time the UK had a re-surgence in the anime culture..., the UK has been a desert when it comes to anime for many years now..., it's been years since I last bought a UK title.., but yesterday..., I ordered the first UK volumes of Noir, Zone of Enders, & Rahxephon from an online store..., should be here by next week...,

Though one thing does confuse me..., why have ADV not subtitled all their UK DVD releases...? The titles I have bought do have subs.., but Hellising which is also distributed by ADV, only has the dub track..., there's no difference in the prices, so why...?

Yep.., your memory is correct.., Manga did attempt to make anime more controversial by licensing the more violent titles..., & their aquisition manager at the time was a bit of a muppet too...,

why what did he do?

i remember that the manga trailers were full of commentators using stupid buzz words like "totally-happening" in a vein attempt to speak the language of youth.

god they were so cheesy.

hmm...Odin i just stayed well away from because of everyone terrible reviews of it. And i have to say that i found ultimate teacher quite funny...it was just so mad i found myself laghing. Especially when there was a james bond style fight scene in the local kwik-e-mart

but you have to give credit for manga for getting the anime ball rolling in the UK. People in the UK only seem to wanna watch something new only if its contaversal. *i.e an animation full of violence and sex* if something bening like Nadesico had been released first instead of Urokosokodoji, anime wouldnt have gotten as much coevrage as it did.

Oh, but I do..., if it weren't for Manga Video, the UK would probably be still in the dark about anime (or all we'd get is the kiddy stuff at any rate).., it's just that if they had 'worked' with the anime fans back when they started in the early 90's (asked for feedback on titles, etc).., we may have had a more established & stable anime scene like the US (not as big, but better established).., instead, due to the reaction of the mainstream media because of titles like Urotsukidoji.., the anime scene in the UK has waxed & waned like mad...,

But thank god our TV anime isnt butchered up like americas is. We have uncut blue gender, cowboy beebop and outlaw star on our screens while all america gets is butchered versions simply because american tv is retarded when it comes to ratings.

i love the way our toonami shows uncut outlaw star along with all the bad langauge. Where when OS showed on "adult" swim it qas still censored. and on the "kiddie friendly" toonami channel we get uncensored version

Toonami (Formely CNX, no real change though except no more live action stuff) could actually do well if they ever bothered to get there act together, they got off to a good start when they showed uncut OS and Cowboy Bebop, then they did nothing, and I guess there rateings went down, so they gave up and became the Toonami Channel, if they would just put effort in they could do well, but did they expect adults to be able to watch the same shows 100x in a row? OK maybe little kids can do this with stuff like DBZ, but because adults didnt they said "We can not compeat in the adult area" or something to that effect and gave up its stupid.... They just need to put effort in and employ some people who know about anime.

If some of us took over I bet we could have a great anime channel up and running in no time.

Ah but you have to remember that getting the rights for broadcasting is probably more of a hassle than we may realise...

Or they really could just suck
