Talking Worried about inaccurate translations? You ain't seen nothing yet

I take it lots of you are familiar with the "translation" site Babelfish and their reputation for "accuracy". (http://babel.altavista.com/)Well what if they did fansubs? *shudder*

Well one fansub group (who call themselves "babelfish fansubs") thought this would be funny and made a fansub of the Kirby TV series using Babelfish. And you thought Animejunkies were bad! This is HILARIOUS!!!! The translation turns out like "rub the desired kirby something".

Has anyone else seen this? It makes Hoshi no Kirby actually worth watching! I'd love to see them massacre Evangelion or something. Have Babelfish fansubs made any other parody subs?

What, so they're intentionally making weird subs? Sounds hilarious.

"rub the desired kirby something"

Maybe it's just for a more mature audience in Japan.

The sad thing is from what I heard some HKDVDs have english fansubs translated like this using babelfish.

Japanese to Chinese
Chinses to English.

And it's no parody.

Yeah I know I just happened to chance across this in a...um P2P downloading program...but I've been searching and I can't find a website, IRC channel, nothing! I don't even know who I got the clip from.

If I do discover anything more about the group I'll post it (within rules and stuff blah blah).

Wow, that IS sad. I pity the poor soul who didn't know that and actually paid for those pirated crap renditions.

Hmm, I may have one of these! Either that, or my subbed X (TV series) has truly awful translations. Which would truly ---- me off, because it's not supposed to be a HKDVD!

This is sort of on-topic, since it's about bootlegs. This is an actual, unedited conversation between a friend of mine and I on MSN.

Jason Imperiale says:
Hah, that's bootlegged?
~-~ŠarkPrimus says:
you obviously understand nothing about buying anime on ebay
Jason Imperiale says:
Of course not.
Jason Imperiale says:
Want to explain?
~-~ŠarkPrimus says:
no, you're obviously not understanding
Jason Imperiale says:
It's bootlegged. How do you arrive at that conclusion?

Pretty much if it has English subs WITHOUT an English language voice track it's a bootleg or at least of dubious origin. I got burned by a few HK DVD's before I knew the real scoop on them. Basically I got the story of Limited Licensing agreements and distrubion rights outside of Japan.. the same song and dance from the SM Audio CD's years ago. The ONLY exception to the HK rule I have found is Ghibli/Disney releasing official DVD's in HK with Eng subs (I have a Spirited Away from HK with eng subs that is official from Buena Vista Video.. I heard they wanted to get in on the streets in HK before the bootleggers could get one out)

For disastrous translations of both dubs and subs we have our good friends at SelectaVision in Spain, who translated Evangelion with issues as this one:
AT Field = Anti Tank Field
Core = S^2 Core, because when dissasembling the purple angel we hear gendou sayin "Is this the source of energy?"
Eva 02 has no soul, Kaworu says that in ep 24.

And as these, there are many many more. Thanks god I don't have those VCR dubs anymore. Saw them once and puked.

A good thing to note is that a lot of fansubbers translate using scripts that are of other languages besides Japanese. Japanese to Korean to English or Japanese to Chinese to English are a few I have seen. Being translated once is difficult enough.

Translations are pretty much an art, and needs a good understanding of both cultures, word conations, and etc.

Yeah according to Jaganshi Hiei a translator for BakaMX Fansubs (One of the best fansub groups around imo along with AnimeCo) Animejunkies take their translations off a korean website called shinbiro and translate it from there.

You can read about it in this thread.

I've never dled an AnimeJunkie fansubso far and the more I find out about them the chance of that happening is very slim.

Oh I've tried almost them all, and the worst I've seen where those Aku Fruits Basket (Who the hell leaves the intro and outro out, and with a horrible encode, Mein Gott in Himmel, that was crap). I thought fansub groups made their own scripts from what they heard on the audio track! I think I lost my green today.
