Cool Gungrave

I just finished disc 1, episodes 1-4. After episode 1, I thought, "Great. Here's another empty anime -- all blood and guts, with a few stupid monsters thrown in. But no real characters and no real plot."

Then I watched episode 2 -- and got hooked. Episode 2 begins the backstory. Here we get well defined characters, strong interpersonal relationships, a real noir feeling, and a good plot.

The main character is Brandon Heat, aka From Beyond the Grave. That should prove interesting when he tries to cash a personal check. He's the strong, silent type. He rarely speaks. And he kicks ass.

I've got 6 discs to go.

Comments?

Definately a must see, its action packed and the story is captivating, somewhat different then what we are used to, its not allways straightforward who right or wrong but what is in their own best interest.

I forgot to add that I watched episodes 1-4 in Japanese with the subtitles, and then went back and rewatched with the English dub. There are a lot of small, but important details in episode 1 that you miss the first time around. Watching the episode after watching episodes 2-4, you see these little details.

I will start disc 2 tonight.

The English and Japanese (w/ subtitles) versions do differ slightly. There are some minor insights that one gives that the other doesn't. Even so, it's worth watching each episode twice.

And I just finished disc 2, episodes 5-8. Brandon's character continues to evolve, or devolve.

One criticsm I do have is with the color scheme. It's kind of pety, but I think the colors should be a bit muted and more grayish to match the subject matter.

I've now finished disc 3, episodes 9-12. The story has morphed from a gangster tale to a sci-fi one. I was afraid this would distrupt the flow of the story, but the change has not missed a beat.

I've finished disc 4, episodes 13-16, so I just past the halfway point in the series. Brandon has followed his friend Harry to the top of the Organization, but has he learned too late that Harry cannot be trusted? The events leading up to what we saw in episode 1 are unfolding. Has Brandon's luck run out, or does he have an ace up his sleave?

I'm not telling.

Cool

I finished disc 5, which brings me up to episode 20.

In episode 1, we saw a schoolgirl named Mika on the run and looking to avenge the murder of her mother. She makes the aquantance of Brandon Heat, aka Beyond the Grave. She is in fact the daughter of Brandon's lost love Maria. Now we return to that moment knowing all the backstory. And Brandon is taking on the Milleneon crime organization, of which he was once a part, facing his old friends in a fight to the death.

I have two more discs to go! And the story is getting more interesting!

I finished disc 6, episodes 21-23. Brandon/Grave is facing down the top Milleneon brass one by one.

So why in battle does Brandon wait until his adversaries transform into monsters before he attacks? Well, after his bonehead play in episode 21, it is obvious that thinking is not Brandon's strong point. Then again, those battles are what we watch the series for. Still, Brandon could use a bit more smarts.

One more disc to go. I should finish the series this weekend.

Cool Series Finale

I finished the series! What a powerful ending! And yet a bit sad. You know that Brandon's and Harry's fate is tied to one another. You know that everyone will have to pay for their sins. But you really don't know how.

I recommend Gungrave.

Its been three years since I commented on this series? How time flies!

But I wanted to come back and mention Gungrave is now on Comcast Infinity's On-Demand -- for free! But the first three episodes can only be seen through the end of this week! Watch it if you can.
