Why neon?

Why the title? Evangelion means gospel, genesis means beginning, but what the heck is neon? The best i've heard is that it means new...but it's not neo, it's neon. What does the japanese literally translate as? Does it really mean neon like the gas? If so, what gives? Are we supposed to think neon = neon lights = modern society? That's a real stretch of logic. Wark. *eats toast*

The Japanese title, Shin Seiki Evangelion, literally translates to mean "New Century Evangelion".

Anno wanted the title changed to Neon Genesis Evangelion for english speaking audiences for some reason. Maybe he though it sounded cooler.

It's a title....

It gives the show a unique title that catches the audiences attention such as what were doing now. But it's just a title nonetheless...

hmm, i always thought it was like flashy; neon being bright, exciting, u know, inspirational...and being all these things, it may represent hope for a new beginning

One might also interpret it as in the fact that the eva's (Unit-01 atleast) have somewhat a a neonish style of coloring too them. (ex. Unit-01's green, orange, and purple) So you could look at it that way as well.

Heh

Good thing it was changed, "New Centuary Evangelion" sounds like a Gundam.

((Steps boldly into the thread and lays the smack down))

Neon = New

Genesis = Generation (or millenium, depending on translation)

Evangelion = Gospel

Neon Genesis Evangelion = New generation Gospel OR, more acurately -- Gospel for a new generation.

((bows)) Thank you.

I really think it meant 'New' The Japanese name is Shin Seiki Evangelion. The Shin there could either mean new or true.

IMO:

Neon = New

Genesis = Beginning

And I think Evangelion speaks for itself

Hence, it's got something to do with a new beginning, ie after 2nd impact, or even 3rd impact.
