Why is American Animation So Bad Nowadays?

Not to beat a dead horse, but I do think that for the most part, the American animation industry has pretty much sucked since the early 1970s. Not that there hasn't been some real gems, like Real Ghostbusters, Gargoyles, most of the DC series and Thundercats 2011, but the stinkers seem to outnumber the good stuff. Thundercats started out solid, a nice, intense action/revenge fantasy, but it lost its creative focus about halfway through in the manner of a series which had been planned for an indefinite run. Adventure Time is definitely bizarre fun, and the Green Lantern series was surprisingly adult and dark in nature.
However, all too often, American studios seem to be trying too hard to create edgy material, but which winds up looking just plain ugly and lacking in any sort of emotional warmth whatsoever. At least they don't tack little moral messages at the end of each episode like was so painfully common back in the 80s. So, is there any hope for the genre?
