Generally new to anime, where should I start.

Ok, I know that I am going to get the newbie tazer for this one, but can I get some suggestions from you guys and girls on where a newbie anime lover should start? What are the most popular and classic anime (movies, OVA or series) that I should get?

I currently have all of the Initial D DVD's (I am a car guy and that is why I got into Initial D). I also have Ghost in the Shell, and I have seen Akira a couple of times.

I will be getting Evangelion: Perfect Collection next, but that is about all I know.

I am into Mecha and/or quality intriguing storylines. So I dont really like DBZ .

I think that RahXephon looks pretty cool after that but I am willing to take suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Well if you like intrigue and mechas, than you will indeed love Evangelion.

You could check the ultimate mechas series,Gundam.ALthough there are many Gundam series set in a timeline, you don't need to watch them in order.

Vandread was really nice, with 3D animated mecha battles.

Well, I'd suggest checking out a lot of the more popular mainstream anime. Not because they're popular and well-liked by many, but because they usually have good blends of animation and story.

Two I suggest starting off with is Eva (which you apparently are already planning on getting) and Cowboy Bebop. Oh, and I'd throw in Love Hina to get a feel of the romance comedies that are out there.

Booyaka.

Been promoting that search button alot i see... Anyways ive really gotten into Hellsing, short but sweet (in a twisted sort of way). Also if you havent dabbled into Rurouni Kenshin OVAs and series i suggest you do so. Plus as said above Cowboy Bebop is very good.

Ok, as far as classics go I can help name a few I find are really entertaning.
1)Ranma 1/2:the T.V series(its a long one at seven seasons)and all the movies and ovas are great.

2)Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. These would be the subtitled only versions though. Don't know if your into all that yet but deffently a classic. Lots of mecha and great charecterizaton.

3)Berserk:Not exactly a "classic" but still a highly recomended series. Great action and plot.

4)Perfect Blue, Pyscologocal thiller. It will mess with your head in such a good way.

5)Record of Lodos War: Once again both the series are great. The origanal OVA and the Chronicals of the Heroic Knight.

6)It really is more of a light harted show but Slayers is a deffant classic and is worth your time. Its a fantasy setting but as far as charecter interaction goes I really think it is great stuff.

There are allways more my suggeston take some chances and grab what catches your eye. You will find some duds but you just never know.

P.S. Raxaphone is a great sereis get it now

Shock one from the Newbie tazer. The reason I posted this is because searching would give me a whole bunch of information without a way to synthesize or evaluate it.

Oh, I also love Inu Yasha, I love epic stories.

I have watched several episodes of Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swin, it definitely seems interesting, almost space opera-ish.
