Gonzo's latest: The Last Exile

Here's the link for the preview for The Last Exile. As the topic stated, it's Gonzo's latest anime venture.

It looks interesting. It kinda reminds me of Skies of Arcadia. The song was cool too. Anyway, it piqued my interest, but I just hope it's not setting me up for an upset like KG. (I know, I know, it gets better after episode 8 or whatever, but ya gotta admit the first few episodes were an incredible let down from what was expected in the preview).

This series is supposed to celebrate Gonzo's 10th year in business, so let's hope it turns out to be a good one.

Yeah, I really like the look of Last Exile. It looks like it cold be another steam-punk genre a la Sakura Wars (but better). The trailer I saw was a little shaky tho and its too short to get a semblance of the plot and characters. Anyway, interested to see more.

Hmm I'll look into it, KG is starting to blow, I manage to make it up episode 14. It had a good plot going after episode 8th, but went down hill

I managed to solve the mystery of the main characters BG flashbacks, they are over thousand years old, but they use children forms to live and change time to time....
sorta bites though

all i want to say is...

[personal opinion] gonzo is overrated. [/PO]

the only series i liked is Vandread and thats it. Hellsing got boring and RBHS went downhill. i know i know i should see more of their series, but from what i heard from FMP! and KG, then i stand by my opinion

Yeah it does look interesting. Have to wait see how it turns out though. I did like the CG used in that trailer.

Whew, finally got some time to watch the first episode. All I can say is... wow. That was one of the better first episodes I have ever seen in anime. Beautifully done and so far, an invigorating and captivating story.

Anyone else have a look-see yet?

OH MY GOD WOW! Last Exile is beautiful! Totally amazing. It far surpasses that crap GONZO have been churning out lately. (Kiddy Grade, Vandread, Gravion. All that cliche-space, cheezy stuff.)

This is TRUE steam punk and the kind of series I've been waiting to see. Its so good and to be honest, I'm not a GONZO fan. Most of their stuff is cliche, low-quality fanservice and boring. The only shows of merit I've think they've made are Blue Sub and Saikano. This new Last Exile series is definitely of this vein.

The character designs are totally unique and gorgeous. I love that girl with the bob haircut and her partner. They are very likable characters.

That one soldier, who was chanting over and over to protect himself in battle...I don't think I've ever liked a character so much so quickly. (Reminds me of World War 1 battle stories, although their uniforms are from an earlier time period.)

All the designs are rooted in history (partly late 1800's industrial and the reign of steam technology, partly Victorian, partly 1930's, partly Revolutionary War/Napoleonic, European feel, but mostly Victorian IMOP). The opening and ending scenes look like antique photos and silent film reels. Incredible shots. The music is also fitting, and beautiful so far. It doesn't stand out, like say Yoko Kanno, but it is perfectly fitting orchestral work.

I like this show because it it so different from everything that has come before. Last Exile is definitely worth a look.

In fact, I'm going to look up the director. What else has he done?

Here's a full list of the production staff:

Quote:
from Anime Caravan
Director: Koichi Chigira
( Full Metal Panic!, Gate Keepers )

Series Story Editor: Koichi Chigira
GONZO

Character Conceptual Design: Renji Murata
( Blue Submarine No. 6 )

Animation Character Design: Osamu Horiuchi
( Full Metal Panic!, Knights of Ramune, Gate Keepers )

Production Design: Mahiro Maeda
( Blue Submarine No. 6, Gate Keepers )
And: Makoto Kobayashi
( Gravion, Gundam ZZ )

Art Director: Keiichi Oku
( Jin-Roh, Ghost in the Shell movie, Appleseed )

Layout: Hitoshi Ueda
Koichi Chigira, the director, doesn't have the greatest animes under his belt, but I won't hold them against him since I'm am utterly impressed thus far.

Keiichi Oku, the art director, pwnz all!

Without jumping the gun too much, Gonzo has put out nearly all the stops on their 10 year anniversary series and has been very successful in just one episode.

I totally agree. When I watched the trailer, I noticed a strong resemblence to the 19th century European era. Not just in the clothes/uniforms worn by the characters, but also the scenery, equipment, and technology. After watching the first episode, my speculation became readily apparent. Rather interesting art direction for an anime... also very appealing.

Wow, I'm impressed. This was a very good start to a series. CG blend was very nicely done.

I just hope that I have enough bandwidth allowance to keep following it
