ms publisher and word save files on steriods

Ok my boss at work has a problem that i need to fix but wouldnt have clue about.

He saves small bits of work in both word and publisher, then edits bts and saves and so on. The more saves he makes the larger the file becomes.

A normal file is abut 300kb with images and the likes. the same file heavily edited a number of times and saved can be over 12mb big, yet is the same as teh 300kb one just with no spelling errors and such.

If he chooses save as and replaces the file then the file size remains constant.

On both programs he as set it up so that every 10-20 minutes the program automatically saves, but i doubt that is the problem.

any idea what is the problema nd how to fix it?

I never heard of any such thing, but it sounds like it embeds a full backup copy of the document each time it is edited and saved. It must be some wierd setting in the options, because this is definitely not normal. Does the file size change drastically if he leaves it open and just lets it autosave when he works on it? Or just when he manually saves?

If it's not a setting that's doing it, you might have to reinstall the applications.

I recently downloaded some MP3's. They only took a few minutes to download and are completely normal in every respect......Except, they seem to be taking up several gigabytes of space on my hard drive

There is a setting called "Fast Save." This (duh) quickly saves the document. However, it doesn't entirely replace your file with he newly edited data, instead it just physically stores the new stuff at the end of the computer file, even though the appearance looks like normal.

Go to the "Tools" menu, then select "Options". Click the "Save" tab and look at "Allow fast saves."

I don't know if saving automatically so frequently is a good idea, since "Fast Save" bloats the file, apparently each time it is saved. If you absolutely must schedule it so often, simply turn off the Fast Save option. Otherwise, just leave it on & tell him to save it manually (a good habit anyway for any computer user).

But you're right, using "Save As..." will give you a "neatly" saved file, but this isn't nearly as easy as just manually saving with "Fast Save" turned off.
