Can I ban Download Accelerator with Apache?

Considering I'm running Apache on Win2k and for example, httaccess doesn't seem to work, I was wondering if I could ban or avoir people from downloading files from my server using download accelerator, because that program in particular eats a lot of bandwidth and paralizes website traffic. Can I limit those leechers?

I think it's possible to limit only one download per computer at a time, but I have no idea how to do it exactly. Some sites I have went completely disallowed multiple downloading, only one channel at the same time.

As for .httaccess, have you read http://httpd.apache.org/docs/misc/FA...#htaccess-work ?

I didn't know that about httaccess... thanks! Didn't know I needed to set the allowoverride to something else inside the Directory thingie. I thought that browsing for httaccess files was automatical.

About DA, I know that there are two things that might affect it:

Code:
#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive On

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 500
But if I lower this stuff it might affect regular non DA users. I would like to ban strictly DA. I bet it can be done as it shows on the log which people used it.

That makes me ask another question: The number of bytes shown in the log such as the following line:

Code:
[Some IP] - - [15/Nov/2004:19:43:11 -0300] "GET largefile HTTP/1.1" 206 17891329 "-" "DA 7.0"
On bold there is a number of bytes, which I suppose are the bytes transferred. But there are large blocks of log lines separated by seconds or minutes, all summing up to a quantity beyond the file size. What does this mean? If I sum all of these entries, the server might have uploaded almost 15 gigs in one night without even affecting regular traffic! And by no means this server can upload such a quantity in such a time...

And on italic, the mark of the sin, Download Accelerator.

One thing more I wonder: Is there any way to view in realtime what's going on in apache? I mean, who's downloading, who's connecting, etc...? Can I make VB interact with Apache? I'd love to do that, no more SQL or that crap again!

If your logs show who's using Download Accelator, I'm sure you can just ban whichever IPs are logged as using it.

I guess I could do that. But I don't know how to ban IP's with apache, also that wouldn't help to avoid people from using DA, just banning the ones who used it, but the damage is done anyways.

Most sites I know of will limit download connections to two/three at a time, so that might be a default parameter (at least on the server they're on). If you are using a hosted service, maybe they have a tech support you can ask?

No, I'm hosting my own stuff. I always felt that some things you have to do by yourself. But it has an added price, that's these kind of problems. I wonder if all the problem lies on the keepalive stuff, and how can I interact more with apache, like getting realtime info and stuff. Don't you know any other place where I could ask stuff like these?

I searched around, and looks like such feature is not available on Apache, but it is possible with a mod, which is what Apache is all about.

Well, as I previously said I'm not an Apache person, so I guess you're on your own. But good luck with future experimentation
