Identify this card...

Im gonna look like a fool doing this...

Anyway (grits teeth) I got a new comp about a month ago--A PIII 866Mhz 128MB RAM And have been having all sorts of fun with it... considering Im used to a P166 32MB RAM.

Hlaflife used to run poorly on the 166 (640x480 resolution 20fps) it runs better on the PIII, but still not nearly as well as id like. (800x600 resolution 25-30fps),

I want to run it in 1024x768 with 40fps and higher and i was expecting to be able to as well, but I really doesnt like being in higher res than 800x600 it (runs like ****) Anyway I reckon its my graphics card...and to instill you with understanding I have a nice srceenshot of its properties...

Now Is this card good for gaming at all? Can you reccomend a card that will give me my required performance as mentioned above without difficulty. I dont want to spend too much on a new card even some old card would be fine if it ran HL/CS fine...

Help!

Heres a tip:

I have a PIII 533mhz computer with a ATi Rage Fury 32mb graphics card, I run half-life in 1024x768 and get exactly 40 fps, so remember, its not the computer that will change the graphics, its the CARD...

you've got a TNT2 M64.....not good.

Basically they're a neutered TNT2. Not exactly cutting edge...

Any card with a Geforce2 MX or a Kyro2 chipset will hit 40fps easily considering the rest of your system.

I could get one of those...um 64MB ones--the really fast ones... That you need to play Doom.

But i dont really want something cutting edge, just something that'll let me play HL/CS well

yes jetalone is correct, the m64 is a really cheapass version of the TNT2 with cut down features. The performance is only slightly better then the TNT1 really.

Instru for what you want a tnt2 ULTRA or maybe a V3 will be fine(it'll work well for your budget too).

Huh? Since when did doom need a 64MB video card?

But i dont really want something cutting edge, just something that'll let me play HL/CS well

I would recommend a G-Force 2 based card...

Entry level cards will give you the 40 fps for Halflife for about 100$

If you have you sights on multimedia, then Radeon.

Screw buyin a new card... that m64 will serve you well enough.

I have a Duron 650 @ 850 and an M64 VANTA at 140/180 (overclocked).

I get 100 fps most of the time in CS.

Getting 20-25 fps is bs. What driver version are you using? I suggest you download the 6.31 Nvidia reference drivers. These are the best frivers for your card. Anything higher will actually degrade performance.

After you dl and install thses drivers, do a search for "coolbits reg hack". When you dl this registry file, double click it to add it to your registry, then right click your desktop, go to properties --> settings --> advanced --> TNT2 Model 64 --> Additional Properties, and there should be a new tab called Hardware Options. Enable overclocking, then reset. Then start overclocking your memory MHz. Don't worry about the core MHz, it doesn't do hardly anything. Increment by 5MHz each time until you start to see "sparklies" or tearing in games. Play around with it until you find a level where it's fast but no problems.

This SHOULD give you at LEAST 60 fps.

Try Hercules Prop 2mx. Cheaper, faster, and more stable than v5500. No offense gts

Gobi what res do you use? 100 fps with m64 seems... unreal...
And I would recommend 6.39 They're as fast as 6.31 and work better with dx8.

ROFL Gobi... Screenshots and some benchmarks please

To be honest the v3 would be a step up, thats what I had forever untill got my G2 MX. But since you do have a nice system I would much rather see you get the Prophet 2 like 3rd said, or if your willing go with the Ultra, but I'd wait till after the G3 has been out for a month to let price drop on everything first. Ultra should be in the low 2 hundreds here in a month so i'd hold off for a bit.

Update

I downloaded and installed 6.5.0.0 drivers (finally got around to it)and its sooo good. Before, as i said, Id get 20-30 fps in 800x600 ,,, now I get maybe 40fps in 1280x1024! (Im a poor judge of fps perhaps its innacurate) Its absolutely ------' incredible. I started at the usual 800x600, the fps were way higher, so I kept increasing resolutions ... I did not see a performance hit *in the least* all the way up to 1280x1024...
I have no idea wtf is going on but ... im not complaining!

So, Gobi, you say that anything higher than 6.3 drivers will degrade performance ...? More information please.
(I dont feel confident enough to do any overclocking btw so forget about that.)
