More info from AnimeNation's website...,
Production IG has officially announced that the second GitS movie, "Innocence: Ghost in the Shell" is currently in production, with assistance from Studio Ghibli, for Japanese in 2004.
The Production IG homepage hints that the new film is a love story, and Mamoru Oshii, in an interview published in the current issue of Raijin Game & Anime Magazine states that the new film will be more erotic and unlike his previous works.
A love story......? Umm...., how, exactly....?
Mind you..., with Studio Ghilbi as co-producers..., it will be interesting to see how this movie pans out....,

Wait a sec... is this movie going to be a sequel to the first? Because, if I'm remembering things correctly
SPOILERS... (has anyone here not seen GitS?)
didn't Kusanagi end up in the body of a little girl? Maybe she's going back to school, in which case they can dress her up in one of those short-skirted school uniforms that those Japanese animators seem to love so much... That would make sense with the title "Innocence"...

well in the manga she did have a boyfriend (and had had relationships before that), though as Batou and the others said, they don't tend to last. I think three months was her record. Need to read that part of GitS again.
..or after the events of GitS, maybe she falls in love with a program on the net..

Somehow I'm not surprised. I mean, if I was a guy, I'd be a little freaked out if I was her boyfriend. A girl that can go invisible, beat the crap out of me, and leap from tall buildings?! Not only that, but a girl who gets her kicks out of interfacing with another cyborg...

OMG Studio Ghibli meets Ghost in the Shell?!?!?!? This is the CRAZIEST stuff to come out of Japan since Disney meets Square! But hey, I'm liking it so far.
And I take it that lots of GiTS fans are amused by the romance factor of GiTS? After reading your posts, I know I am.

SPOLIER AHEAD FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE SILLY ENOUGH TO NOT HAVE READ THE MANGA

At the end of the manga, she became a man
If anything I think that this isn't too surprising as subject matter for the film. There was a subtle hint of sexuality in the film especially in that final sequence. I think that this should be interesting though the teaming with Ghibli suggests even more possibiliies. Will Motoko discover her inner Totoro?

If by high art you mean it's fun to smoke pot and look at Mike Mignola's art, I'm in total agreement.

Well, Oshii also thought that Jin-Roh ended up being a love story (which it was), so I wouldn't count on GitS2 necessarily being all stars and roses...

IMPLIED SPOILERS FOR MANGA AND MOVIE
Motoko ended up in an adult female body again by the beginning of Ghost in the Shell 2 anyway. NO reason they can't do the same with Innocence.
The "eroticism" part does have me concerned; they only thing "erotic" about Man-Machine Interface was the constant panty shots, and I'd hope Oshii wouldn't replicate those.
