The Review A Video Game Thread

RAVG.

Any game, from any era: the latest Playstation III games or the original Pong arcade machine.

A chance to eulogize, trash/whinge about or draw attention to underrated gems. Or if you want to be serious, write a balanced review. Enough reviews and we'll send these so-called "professional games reviewers" back to where they belong - the Jobcentre.

All games to be given a rating out of 10.

So I'll start things off with a short SNES review:

Final Fight

Decent game. A lot of fun in 2-player mode, but it gets repetitive very quickly. There were only 3 characters, and 2 of them were pretty similar. Having said that, this is a good way to release some tension: just brainless button bashing.

6/10.

Since were on the topic of Sega...

Ballz 3D
This was one of my favorite games. You take control of a mass of spheres and fight another mass of spheres until your sphere bar is drained and your mass of spheres falls apart. It's basically a classic fighting game. It was one of the first in the genre to incorporate a 3-D environment.

7/10

Final Fight was only released on Nintendo SNES ...

But yes I remember playing Ballz, which I think appeared near the twilight period of the Megadrive/Genesis. It was one of the better fighting games at that time, although the fighters lacked the charisma of the Streetfighter crew.

Putting on the rose-tinted glasses, definitely agree with DD2&3 being classics. DD3 had an incredibly tough final boss. DD4 was an abomination though.

Never played Tecmo Bowl, but I found the John Madden games quite entertaining ... which I think had player stats as well.

Guardian Heroes sounds like a great concept. I looked at some screenshots and immediately thought "Gunstar Heroes" - and then found out it was by the same developers Treasure!

Personally, I enjoyed Tecmo Bowl 3 because you could create your own players. 10/10

As for Double Dragon ~ I hated that game. 3/10
Battle Toads and Double Dragon ~ Thats a different story. 8/10

Magical Hat Flying Turbo Adventure (Mega Drive)

Screenshot looks fantastically basic, but the graphics improve in other places. It's really the gameplay that hooked me though. Up there with Mario IMO, if not better in some aspects. You can collect pills and summon giant robots to defeat equally giant bosses. The main character can do some neat moves such as doing knee-ups in mid-air to slow down the rate of descent and fly, and some of the later levels are quite creative in design (can't quite remember how - working on a >13 yr memory here!)

Apparently, it's based on an anime as well, and was released with deformed graphics as Decap-Attack for its Western release (played that as well, this is better).

9/10
