North America is region one. For a good map, go here:

Region 1 and 2 is where all the good DVDs are.

Just bought myself a 'multizone' DVD player. It is a multizone because it has been modified....Which is illegal to do, but apparently Panasonic has found a loophole and is selling these modified players as multizones. I wonder how long before the rules are changed and Panasonic has it's hand slapped

Region 1 is what all of my titles except a few Bond films are Anyway Americas Region 1, Japan and Europe are Region 2 etc. Get most of your Anime from region 1 if possible, though Region 2 typically has better quality and more titles, from japan they are hellishly expensive and don't often contain English subtitles

There was a bit of discussion about this on the Miyazaki Mailing List (until we got our hands slapped for being off-topic

Apparently the Region encoding is only an industry agreement - there's no *law* against multi-region mods...

Did you buy a player which can switch regions, or it just Region 0?

I just won a bid on "Death & Rebirth" on Ebay, but I was so impatient with getting it that I missed some crucial text on the side: Imported from Japan.

So I e-mailed the seller and asked if the DVD was region 1 or 2. She had no clue, says she'll have to ask her supplier. HE has no clue. So I have to explain it out in detail and point her to the DVDdemystified site. She still hasn't responded yet...damn me for not thinking about the region coding...screw the MPAA!!!

why do they have to make these stupid regions.

its like playstaion 1 all over again. the first ones they released where multicompatible, then sony thought that was a bad idea, and changed it so the american ones have different codes. -------.

and why is it illegal to make a region 1 and 2 combined player. i think they just wanna make more money and force us to by both kinds.

some dvd's have no region or region 0 which is cool. maybe the reason they cant find out what region it is, is becuase it doesnt have one.

Oh, I hope so. I'm planning on getting a codefree player sometime anyway, but until then I'm using my PSX2. You think someone'll come up for a region hack/modchip for it?

There are some DVDs which won't play in a Region 0 player. In that case, it's better to have a multi-region player, if you can.

D&R is Region 2 (Most Japanese DVDs are encoded as such) theyre encoded over there because theyre popular and therefore don't need the sales boost Region 0 gives. I have seen ads for a place here in Aus that will region hack a PS2 and let it play NTSC games but I don't know of anywhere in America BUT it can be done
