~~~~Somewhere~~~~
“Over there.” Fangolas pointed to a nearby building that was more or less whole. Most of the windows were blown out, jagged bits of glass clinging to wooden frames, but the walls and ceiling were standing, and the building looked secure. “We can stay in there. It looks safe, or as safe as anyplace here can be. “
Fangolas then looked back at the melef making its way through the ruins -- it was near impossible to miss the gleaming white machine in this war torn gray city – then turned back to Findel and eyed the silver lighter. “I guess you can start a fire inside. There’s enough debris around to get a decent one started, but I’ll see what else I can find to sustain it through the night.”
The Nomad turned to leave, shifting the pack of supplies he carried as he did so. They hadn’t expected this and were ill equipped for the cold, damp winter, and if they didn’t find an inhabited city or decent hunting they’d run out of food in a matter of days. Perhaps he’d be lucky and scare up some game while searching the surrounding area.
“You’ll have to wait here. We didn’t expect anyone to arrive so soon, not for another few days at the earliest, so several of the officers are out with the troops on surveillance or training exercises.”
“So I’ll wait.” Dharr stomped the mud and dirt from his boots before entering the large blue tent with gold banners that served as a command site for the camp. Inside it was much warmer and drier thanks to the charcoal heaters set in the corners, and Dharr shrugged off his cloak and draped it over the back of one of the battered wooden chairs. “It’s important, but half an hour… and hour… it won’t make a difference to be honest,” he said as he sat himself down before the large table that dominated the tent. “Although we’ve been traveling long and hard, so I’d appreciate it if my men would be allowed to enter the camp now.”
“Right away.”
The escort hesitated, unsure if he should bow or salute this man then settled for a shallow bow before exiting the tent, and if Dharr took any offence he didn’t show it. In fact, once alone the mercenary propped his feet up upon the table, leaned back in his chair, folded his arms loosely across his chest, and closed his eyes.
E'rth was happy. Despite the war and the less than perfect conditions, everything was relative, and his life was hundreds of times better than it used to be a year ago, thus he was happy. And so it was with a smile that he tagged along Chigusa. Only once did he stop, pausing to sniff at a large black beetle that was lumbering along the footpath between the tents, and then he quickly hurried to catch back up.
"Where we going?"
The camp was astir. Something had happened and the area practically smelled of anticipation, and E'rth's curiosity wrestled with his timidity. Part of him wanted to find out what was happening while the other half wanted to crawl somewhere safe and hide until whatever approaching storm passed. In the end, curiosity and a desire to stay with Chigusa won, although his ears remained pricked up and alert as they made their way through the camp.
If Dream could have blushed any harder, her face might have gone numb. She was quite wet from the sudden rain, and every move Idein made, though he didn't meant to bump her, caused her clothes to go squish, squish. Tromp, tromp, tromp, tromp, went Escaflowne's great footsteps. Squish, squish, went the poor Earth girl's skirt.
"How... how far is it?" she asked, pressing herself closer to the cockpit's wall. She didn't dare try to look through the visor over Idein's shoulder. Things were awkward enough as it was, and Dream had a feeling if she even tapped Idein's shoulder, Escaflowne would probably topple over... and she was sure that would not be a good thing.
"Fufufu..." Chigusa grinned studying Dharr closely as she peered into the open tent. The soldier had made himself comfortable. Pity he seemed so and worn since the last time she had lain eyes upon him. Then again, who didn't those days? The only person who seemed any better off since the attack on Fanelia was little E'rth. He had been in a really awful situation though, and anything must have been an upgrade.
"Maybe I can get his attention..." Chigusa looked around until finally spotting a small pebble. Casually the young waitress plucked it up and took aim at Dharr's chestplate snickering as it sailed through the air and clinked harmlessly off his armor.
"Pssst...! Dharr!" She didn't want to appear enthusiastic to see him but her days had been so booooooring. Who'd have known she would miss school so much?
((OOC: I was hoping for more posts before posting again, so I waited. Alas, I shall not wait any longer! Onward ho! Oh, and Samari is a sharp tack, because she remembered who Dharr is. Cookies to her!))
*plink*
Dharr opened his eyes and looked around lazily, but he didn't notice anything at first and was about to try and doze off again when another small pebble hit him. This time he sat up, one hand automatically going for the sword at his side.
"Pssst...! Dharr!"
The young man stood, hand still resting on the hilt of his sword, and turned toward the tent entrance. There, peering through the opening was a young woman with green hair. Dharr blinked, scratched his chin, then smiled. It seemed impossible, but there was only one girl he'd ever met with such hair. But while her face he recalled -- although it looked more weary than he remembered -- her name escaped him. The mercenary pushed the tent flap back and gestured for her to enter.
"What a surprise. Come in out of the chill Miss... ah... " He smiled again. "I'm sorry. I know we've met before, but I don't remember your name, nor," he added as E'rth dutifully tagged along beside Chigusa, "do I remember your little friend."
All good things must come to an end.
Roleplays have cycles, and Escaflowne has pulled through before against the odds, but I’ve thought this over for a while now. I do not wish to leave the status of the game in limbo, and thus I believe it’s time to officially announce this game it at an end. Quite frankly, in months we’ve gotten very little done. There’s no more autonomy and initiative, which tells me that the interest is no longer there, and, while it’s part of the GM duties to remind and keep up morale, and I have fought the good fight, I can no longer manage it. So on the anniversary of its creation, I bring this game to a close.
We had our good times and fun moments, it was nice while it lasted, and I only regret that we didn’t reach a point that could be considered a conclusion of sorts. Thus, anyone who is interested in the full story behind Aaron and Cain, the plans for the main plot or any character subplots – such as the mystery of the symbol on E’rth’s collar and who Foucault really was – or has any other inquiries may IM or PM me. Or perhaps I’ll post the details on the webpage, which I plan to keep up for nostalgia’s sake. Finally, feel free to create any threads if you like in this forum relating to the roleplay, banter, extras, discussions, etc.
On February 1st, 2002 the first post of the Animeboards Escaflowne roleplay is made.
On February 1st , 2005 the game is declared over.
Take care.
