Price Comparison...

I'm just wondering, I know we have alot of tech heads on the board and i'm currious as to what kind of deals some of you get.
My friend has been begging me to build him a killer system for under a grand and here is what I finaly ordered for him last night:

T-bird 1gig 266mhz
Asus A7V133 mb
2x 256 sdram 133mhz
Geforce 2 Ultra 64mb
50x Asus CD Rom
12x8x32 Yamaha CDRW
20 gig WD 7200 rpm HD
SB Live Value
Intel v.90 56k modem
+Case Power Supply w/floppy

Total= 994.00 (includes shipping and handling)

I also got a deal on a 19" Trinitron for $320 but hes still thinking about that... I told him its UBER and we went and looked at one at best buy, I think he'll get it, lol.

Actualy i'm a lil bit jealous, I build my system about 4 months ago (1.2gig and rest is about the same) but I spent more like around 1200, of course it was right before RAM was not so cheep like it is now.

I'm in Aus, so who knows what it's like over in the US (where I assume you're from with that pricing).

But, over here, a 1.2GHz TBird is about AUS$30 dearer than a 1GHz. If the same sort of difference is in effect over there, I'd go the 1.2GHz... much better bang for buck.

I got a good deal on a 1giger and Board combo, or yes I would have gotten him higher. The price diff is actualy more like 70 us dollars with the deal I got.

Well the tbird prices are gonna fall since the palamino's are out so might as well get a 1.33 or 1.4. Or just drop the extra loot and go for the palamin. Personaly I am wating for the nforce to do that tho

ya might want to upgrade to DDR Ram

because SDR is dying
that also means you have to get another/different motherboard

. Samadog's right, you shouldn't have chosen the A7V. Choose the A7A or A7M instead.

Plus they run hotter than Intels yet you WILL be rewarded with Pentiums beating performance IMHO

Also, the GF3MX comes out in 4 days.

Yah they will run hotter than normal if you get a good cooler you can bring it down to around about 33c. so its nothing to get worried about they wont melt till about 90c+

If you've already bought the board then what I say will be of no consequence... but, this is why I would not buy it:

The a7a266 has terrible board layout. Power-cable socket placement gets in way of both RAM and HDDs, if you get the onboard sound with it the Aux-in and CDROM headers are right in line with the AGP slot, making it a very tight fit with some vid cards, or an impossible fit with an ATI Radeon. The cpu socket orientation and capacitor placement gives rather little to be desired.

And most importantly, this board is basically an "inbetween" board. It gives you the ability to use EITHER SDR or DDR RAM (not both... not at the same time anyway) but only 2 DDR slots? Yeeesh. Sure, they can hold 1GHz DDR modules, but how easy are you gonna find that stuff... and how much are you gonna pay for it.

(I realise you may not want 2GHz of memory now... but in about a years time that will not be an unfeasable amount).
