I have noticed, not only that so have the people in the Cowboy Bebop forum. The thread started out statint that firefly was a rippoff of Bebop. But as it progressed people started pointing out that it is more similar to Outlaw Star. Personally, when I saw the preview for the first time the first thing that entered my mind was Outlaw.

Firefly IS Outlaw Star. But hey, I'm not mad that they're ripping off Anime for mainstream American viewing! I'm thrilled! This means, if Firefly is successful, we'll see more anime-style American productions, even if they are live action. Can't wait! I actually hope it rips off a lot of anime, combining it all, so that it will seem more original than a rip off of one anime series.

Love Outlaw Star/Love Bebop

Mad? Oh, no. I'm as happy as can be.

I just wanted to respond to that, saying:

I've been doing a little research about the plot and inspiration behind Firefly. What I have found makes me think that the series has very little in common with Outlaw Star , Cowboy Bebop ,or any other single anime series . It is just that it some similarities to nearly every space-based anime series , including Gundam (in that it takes place after a war to unify earth colonies), Outlaw Star (a crew thrown together by fate on the run from nearly everybody), and many more.

Here is some of the basic information about firefly:

Quote:
And so "Firefly" promises no larger-than-life heroes, no larger-than your-house bad guys. It's about nine people aboard a small space transport boldly going where other sci-fi shows haven't, trying to survive after a civil war that saw a totalitarian regime known as the Alliance take control of a host of Earthlike planets that had been colonized by Earthlings.

Whedon added that he's been "kicking around the idea [of Firefly] for a couple of years," and that the idea finally came together while reading a book on the Battle of Gettysburg and the Reconstruction era. Whedon explains, "I wanted to make something that's about a guy who fought for the South, lost and doesn't like anybody anymore. This show isn't about the people who made history; it's about the people history stepped on. It's about their lives and their struggles to keep their ship alive -- as well as the search for meaning in a very dark place

Lightbulb

I think that it combines OLS, CB, and some Trigun. I would say OLS because of the girl in the trunk. It was one of the most obvious OLS referances. When I first saw the commercial, I saw the girl in the trunk and started laughing. I immediately thought, "Gee, that resembles Melfina, complete with fog effects. The similarities with CB is that it's set in the future, with a ragtag crew who are ordinary in most senses. I would have to watch the show when it premieres to get a better picture of it. The Trigun element is that overall western feel (though it does share commonality with OLS and CB) and one of the characters is rumored to be a priest. It kind of has the shade of Nicholas D. Wolfwood of Trigun. But this is just my take. Any opinions?

If it was inspired by an anime, won't it be obvious that the creators will try to make is as different as possible in order to avoid legal dispute and at the same time bring in people that know the similarites between the anime and the show? Those FOX execs aren't so dumb.

It's off and running...

I caught "Firefly" last night and it was pretty well done. The captain reminded me of Gene, in that he's a man with morals and doesn't just follow blindly. The medic's sister reminded me a little if Melfina; aside from the "girl in the case" idea, she was kind of distant from everyone and knew about the ship without even being told. It certainly will be an interesting show, though it has less connections with any anime than I thought. Not to say that's a bad thing.

Pilot/technician(sp?)-Jim Hawking
Technician girl- Edward
Captian- Gene Starwind
First Mate lady chick- Suzuka
The "companion"- Faye Valentine(why? cuz' she's hoe-y.. )
Box girl- Melfina
The Priest- Nicholas Woflwood
Action-loving gun freak....-Spike Spiegel, heh.
