DVD Problems
Ok, I love my PS2 , but some of my anime DVDs won't work on it. My 4th EVA DVD won't work and my 1st and 4th Escaflowne DVDs screw up at one part.(the screen goes black and it says "cannot read disc.") So after I bought them I find out that some japanese DVDs won't work on American PS2s.
Oh well, I guess I was going to buy a real DVD player anyway.
Did or do any of you have this problem?

To be a gift for mortals, old or young:
And, as I mused it in his antique tounge,
I saw, in gradual vision through my
tears,
The sweet, sad years, the melancholy
years,
Those of my own life, who by turns
had flung
A shadow across me. Straightway I
was 'ware,
So weeping, how a mystic Shape did
move
Behind me, and drew me backward by
the hair;
And a voice said in mastery, while I
strove,-
"Guess now who holds thee?"
"Death," I said. But, there,
The silver answer rang,-"Not Death,
but Love."

All my Eva DVDs work, and my Escaflowne vol. 1 DVD works, so I'm not sure. All I know is that my Cowboy Bebop 1st Session DVD won't work, because everyone is against me.

Haha! *ahum.. Better buy a game console, that's just good in playing games (Gamecube!) and a good DVD player (Panasonic!) instead of one that can play games and play DVD's on an average level... That's just my opinion.

Might this be better suited in the DVD forum...
I have a PSX2 and every US DVD I've played on it has been flawless. NGE 1-3, Bebop Sessions 3-6, Tenchi Muyo Ultimate Edition, Kenshin volume 6, Record of Lodoss War OVA set, and both my Hong Kong Eva movie DVDs. Nary a problem.

Actually you have it all wrong.
For DVD's there are 'regions' to prevent piracy. The DVD manufacturer sets the region that the dvd will be sold in during the creation of. US/Canada is Region 1, Japan is Region 5 I belive.
Reguardless its not the DVD's or the PS2, you need to purchase DVD's that are of your region.
P.S. Game Cube will not last long with the attitude of the current CEO of Nintendo. and I quote "We are marketing the cube for the target audience of 8-14, due to this Phantasy Star Online 2 will not be developed for our system."

Actually Japan has the same region code like Europe(2), America has 1. Its not the region, cause I have read somewhere that the psx2 is region code free(no code blocking) or could be removed easily like any dvd player.

Ok there are two possibilities:
- DVD regions
&
- PS2 firmware problems
Despite you PS2, it depends on where and when you bought it.
For the DVDs, however, I've heard about this debate not too long ago. Regions are, however, limited to the console AND the DVD ROMS.
Even though it can work and all, but just be aware about your PS2. You might be able to pin point the problems arising sooner or later.
*Hugs her multi-region DVD player*

Not true. PSX2s sold in the US are region 1-locked, like most DVD players sold here. So trying to play a Japanese region disc most likely won't work. And I'd love to know how easy it is to remove it...

If it was region codes, the disc wouldn't play at all. It would say something about the disc not being authorized instead of not being able to read the disc. I haven't played a non region 1 disc in my PS2, so I don't know what it would say, but it wouldn't play the disc at all.
Of course, make sure the discs aren't scratched or dirty (Sorry, but I have to say that) and that the PS2 lens is clean. Some DVD's can be dirty and scratched and play fine, but other DVD's can have a speck of dust and won't play. If you can return those DVD's and echange them that's what I'd do. Buying another DVD player is not very likely to change the results. If you have access to nother DVD player, see how they work in it.

The PS2 is an average DVD player. Its not bad but its nowhere near a good standalone unit for playback. From my experience too they're incredibly moody as to which titles they will play. My advice honestly is to go and get a Pioneer 535 with full modifications and use your PS2 for games (its what it was designed for).
PS2's need a mod chip (much like PS1's to play intl games) to get them region free. I think theres some about but they're hard to find. Ask around at any mod chippers and see what they say.

The first two episodes of my 1st session Cowboy Bebop dvd used to freeze up a lot, but the other episodes are fine. I guess I got a fluky dvd.

Well the odd thing is that I have watched the following in my PS2 with NO problems.
Anime
Record of Loduss War OVA's
Macross 1
Macross 2
Macross Plus
Serial Experiments lain (all 4 dvd's)
Bubblegum Crisis 1-8+ Music Videos
Bubblegum Crisis 2024 Ep 3
EVA DVD's 1 n 2
Grave of the Fireflies
Non-Anime
The Cell
Charlies Angels
Robocop Uncut
Alien Resurrection
Mortal Kombat
Princess Bride
The Black Cauldron
The Secret of Nymh
Speed
And about 20 others I cant remember 8).
Basically I think this is a very good baseline to prove that the PS2 is a average DVD player and is not substandard.
I would also like to point out that Sony stated that it would be very rare to find a DVD that wouldn't work with the PS2, but then again, they run Veriant......

Speaking of DVD problems. Here's something for anyone who owns a Pioneer DVD player (doesn't matter when you purchased it).
For anyone who tried playing The Cell on their Pioneer DVDs, it didn't work one entire bit....
