Top Ten Greatest 2D Fighting Games

Heres a Top Ten list that I recently posted at The Gunblade Daily which I Asst Manage for a friend. Thought I should post it here since Ive been posting so much about 2D fighters lately. Oh and check out the site if you liked it!!

Last Blade 2 is a beautiful game with detailed characters and backgrounds that would make you cry. Gameplay itself is another wonder. With 3 balanced and innovative styles to choos from this game never gets boring!! However the ridiculously boring cast of characters who all seem to use a sword just made the game unenjoyable. In story mode they were always whining about why must they fight. And once you turned off the game you couldnt even remember the name of the fighter you were playing as.

9. Street Fighter Alpha 3
Oooooohhh!!! Cammy's even cuter in this version!! Alpha 3 gave us an innovative game with a large cast of characters and 3 different play styles. Not to mention the awesome World Tour mode in which you could actually build up the strength and style of your fighter. Why did it land so low in the list? Well the bad fighting engine as well as the fact that if you didnt use the V-ism style of fighting you were severly handicapped just keeps this game from ever competing with the likes of the truly great 2D fighters.

8. Marvel vs Capcom 2
The game that truly redefined the 2D fighting game experience! Youve never seen anything before MvC2 that even comes close to what this game is! Its the fastes, craziest, comboyist fighting game ever concieved. The 3on3 tag team feature and lucrative combo system as well as the beautiful cast of over 50 of our favorite Capcom and Marvel characters come together to create a truly exhilirating experience. The only thing holding this game out of the top of the list is it's glitches galore and horrible balance. If you do not choose Magneto or Sakura or Storm you wont win!

7. Mortal Kombat II
The definition of the MK Series is Mortal Kombat II. The new combos, characters and awesome fatality features make this game a must own for any fighting fan!

6. Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Woohoo!! The Street Fighter series finally got some new characters!! This is the series that introduced my favorite SF character Cammy so its always on my lisit as one of the best. Capcom brought us more of the best fighting game mechanics and controls once again in a game that is still played today by hardcore Sfer's around the globe!

5. Garou: Mark of the Wolves
The Fatal Fury series returns with a BANG!! Who wouldve thought that those geniouses of SNK could put together a fighter that played, sounded, and looked just as good as Street Fighter 3 on a 10 year old Neo Geo board. Like SF3, Garou featured a toatally new cast with only an aged Terry returning to the arena. Garou also introduced Just Defending, SNK's answer to Parries, the T.O.P system, and my favorite the breakable moves!!

4. King of Fighters 98
The best King of Fighters game ever made!!(I hate the striker system!) What makes KOF so much fun? A STORYLINE AND CHARACTERS THAT REALLY AHVE LIFE!! I love SNK for their KOF characters. All of them have a life of their own with an orginality that only the Guilty Gear series can rival. The game featured 2 styles of play Advanced or normal(forget the name =P) The graphics were the usual KOF fair with a little more detail and a larger cast. Gameplay is just fun in this game. Ive never had more fun with any other KOF before or after as I had with 98. Now if I could just figure out why SNK renamed it 99 Dreammatch when they released it on the US DC...

3. Capcom vs SNK 2
The first day I booted up this game in my DC I wouldve told you it is the best fighting game ever made!! 6 grooves, and fast and fun gameplay. The new features and large character count(44) make this game fun and keep it fresh for a long time. Coming up with a team that fits both your playing style and characters that compliment eachother are even funner now than they were in Marvel vs Capcom 2. But after all is said and done CvS2 is just another Street Fighter with King of Fighter characters included this time and thats the only thing holding it back from taking the top spot in my top ten list.

2. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
The pinnacle of Street fighter as we know it! This is the game that totally changed what a Street Fighter game is all about. Awesome control, beautiful graphics and PARRIES!!! This added a whole new side to the game. you could now deflect your opponents attacks and punish them for even thinking they could hurt you. I love what Capcom did with this game! The new characters are fresh and interesting adding new life to the somewhat bland and boring SF series. Too bad the game died out so fast in the US...oh well I was planning on moving to Japan soon anyway!

And the winner is...

1. Guilty Gear X

What can I say about this game besides OMG! Running on SEGA's Naomi boards GGX is by far the most beautiful 2D fighter you will ever see...well GGXX is looking better right now. Playing this game is like watching a moving painting! The graphics are that good! All the characters are fresh and very innovative with moves that make sense. The play mechanics are really what makes this game shine! Control is spot on, match speeds are fast and exciting, Roman Cancelling and the innovative combo system really show the quality and godliness that is GUILTY GEAR X!!

Well thats it! Im done! If you dont agree with my top ten than you can go eat a...I mean post your arguments or better yet your very own Top Ten list here...well not "here"!! Hit the reply button dork!

Yeah!!! GGX all the way. Guilty came, saw, and conquerored. I can't wait for the sequel. As for the top 10, it was pretty accurate to my likings. The Street Fighters are classics. I'm going to check out the site now. Thankx.

My thoughts exactly...

Man, I can't believe you didn't include Xmen vs Streetfighter . . . that was like what started the current trend in 2d games now . . . all the 2 (or 3) character cross over, the team-up attacks, the huge air combos . . . true, some of this stuff was implements earlier in other games, but Xmen vs Streetfighter is what made them popular!

If any SS game were to even get close to making my list it wouldve been SS2. That was by far the best of the series.

your right...it is better than KOF MK2 is AWESOME!! It is on my list because it is an awesome game and deserves the spot I gave it. every other MK game that came after it can go stick a twig up their a$$. MK2 was and is the best the series has and will ever see.

XvS is an awesome game but I dont consider to even be close to this list. The only real thing that impressed me was the fact that you could play both Marvel and Street Fighter characters. Oh and the crazy ass supers. I seen nearly everything else in another fighter before.

Air combos, Huge and Crazy supers - X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes
Tag Teams - Groove on Fight
Button link combos - Street Fighter Alpha

Also everything that was done in XvS was done much better in Marvel vs Capcom 2 in my opinion.

XvS did pull it off with style and although I wouldnt put it in my Top Ten I would say it deserves an honorable mention.

I guess I'm just a bit disgruntled that Street Fighter, 3rd Generation, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 got in there, and Xmen v Street Fighter didn't . . .

Because I know that in my city, Xmen v Street Fighter had much more of an impact than the other two games, in that it was quite probably played much more often . . . and much more popular to boot . . .

But then again, this is your list, and not some popularity contest . . . ^^;;

1 thing that I threw out the window was the popularity of the games. I made this list based on the game engine, control, graphics, characters and moves that makes sense, and the all around fun I had with them. To this day I still play all of these games at least once a month or so. And I think that thats really what makes a game good. The fact that you can keep playing it and its still fun and feels fresh even after so many years have gone by.

SF3 should have made a gigantic impact on 2D fighting but a lot of people really just didnt give it a chance. Everyone constantly complains about CAPCOm doing the same thing over and over with their games and characters but when they finally changed the game nobody gave them a chance. And thats why CAPCOM stopped the SF3 series so early in its life. I really think they were doing a good job with the series and after the awesome 3rd Strike I think the series could have gone way beyond the original ever had.

too bad CACPCOM has decided to not touch 2D fighting for the next couple of years
