Animerica Magazines Sexiest Anime Characters Article

[Robotech Master]

In honor of the insurmountable number of threads dedicated to Anime cuties, hotties, or even specific characters in specific series, I decided to start a thread based on this article from the most recent Animerica Magazine.

Titled "Sex Cels," (interesting title, neh?) it made a list of the 200 hottest characters, 100 male, 100 female.

They were listed, not in any particular order, most likely to avoid fanboy wars. It also put forth the effort to list some of the archtypes for both male and female (the fighter, the seductress, etc).

Being male, I'm going to post the "hottest anime females" list. If anyone really wants, I suppose I can post the other one, or someone else with the list can.

My comments:

Section I: Jump For Joy:

To See Sailor Jupiter, Rei Ayanami (I guess that was a no brainer though), and Deedlit on the list was great. It was also nice to see them complemented with Misato, Asuka, Pirotesse, and gee, 6 other Sailor Senshi

Ryoko, Android 18, and Rio were on the list, and they are some of my fav's too. Not near my top, but it was cool to see them on there.

Section II: Pleasant Surprises:

It was great to see Nadia on that list. I always thought she was sexy in her own way, definatly looked good. I was also happy that Meia Gisborn was on that list alongside Jura.

I was surprised that so many Sol Bianca girls made it onto this list.

Iria made this list, which surpised the heck out of me.

Section III: Odd Issues

Sailor Uranus? Sailor Uranus on this list? Ok, I can kinda see how some guys like her, but Sailor Neptune wasn't on this list. C'mon, you know she's the better lesbian of the two.

Mihoshi is on this list, and no Kiyone? Something wicked this way comes.

Jura and Meia, but no Dita Liebelly?

In the sections where they talk about appeal and archetypes, they do a lot of talking about Yurika from Nadesico, and she was no where to be found.

I haven't seen Street Fighter V the tv series, but from what I know, Cammy had about 2 minutes of screen time in the movie. To be on this list is quite, well...odd.

Section IV: What?

I wonder why they like Sailor Saturn so much? She's cute, yes, but I'd give her two more years before she enters the sexy stage.

Miyu? Don't know who had that idea.

Dorothy Catalogne: Ok, first off, there were way too many Gundam Wing Girls on this list. And as for Dorothy, well, her brows were just frightening.

Kei, but no Yuri!? I don't care if its Flash or Classic, to include Kei and not Yuri is Insane!!!

The strange choices on the female list have made me quite curious about the male list. If you could post it, I'd be quite grateful...

Kanoe and Alcyone...bleh. I like the two characters, but they're both much too skanky and overt about their sexuality to really be sexy. They're mostly just scary. Now, Karen and Presea (from the respective series), on the other hand...

I agree with a lot of what you stated in Sections III and IV, Robotech Master. Miyu? Sailor Saturn? No Yuri? Dorothy and her scary eyebrows?

Making a definitive list of this sort is impossible. There's just too much room for interpretation. Like the AFI's list of the 100 greatest movies, it's meant to spark discussion more than anything else. Who was included? Who was left out? Were some series over represented (hint: yes)? You can't make something like this without pissing somedoy off. In the interest of debate, what did you find wrong with it? Here's my list:

• 'Cute' and 'attractive' are not interchangeable terms with 'sexy;' the idea of Miyu as sexy is... disturbing. She looks like a pre-teen, and I don't care how old she really is. Belldandy is the complete opposite of 'sexy' although she is attractive. Urd, on the other hand...
• Inclusion of characters who are, in a sense, 'too sexy.' I'm talking about Mai, Rio and Nagha here, in particular. These are not women, these are garbage bags full of silicone. They've got the goods, but it is possilbe too have so much of a good thing that it isn't a good thing anymore. Bleah.
• The more well-known series have more representatives. This is what really bugs me the most. The Animerica staff is nothing if not well-informed, so why didn't they take this as an oppurtunity to spread the word about lesser-known series (which incidentally, happen to have better looking women)? Did they think advertisers would pull their ads or something? Don't be ridiculous. I can't even begin to guess at their motivations, but it strikes me as laziness, plain and simple. Can you really come up with a better reason for including any of the DBZ women or Dorothy Catalonia over all the other choices they left out? Face it, not every series has attractive women. Leaving DBZ and Gundam Wing out of one damn article won't hurt your precious sales figures, alright?
• Let's get down to specifics: if Nadia is on the list why not Electra or Grandis from the same series? Nadia might have better name recognition, but come on, how can you compare? Nobody from the El Hazard OAV? Surely you jest! Ifurita did the pale skinned, blue haired puppet heroine bit before certain other characters who made the list, and she did it better. Kei, but no Yuri? As long as we're talking about the original, and not the skanky Flash versions, they're both deserving. Akane, but no Ukyo? Bloodberry, but no Cherry? No Devil Hunter Yohko?! And so on, and so on, and so... Frankly I think thise section could go on forever, but I'm cutting it short here to give other people room to vent. Or disagree vehemently with my comments. Whichever.

Wichs shows that this poll was made from a bunch of teenagers who just named their favorite anime girl wether they found them sexy or not.

Sailor Saturn made the list, oh! yayy..she's my all time favorite bishoujo. And her age fluctuates from the seasons. She's somewhere around the age 14-15 in the S season, but in the SuperS and Stars she's more like 12..

Sailor Neptune didn't make the list..but the icky Mioshi (sp?) from Tenchi Muyo did. Yeah. Makes sense.

*applauds Dryden-san* You covered in detail all of my complaints about the list, particularly the first part ("cute"/"attractive" vs. "sexy"). Good point about Ifurita as well.

I'll save my strongest opinions for the male list. God knows that ought to be interesting.
