increasing web traffic
how do you webmasters out there get traffic to your site? I know there's search engines but they take so looooong to actually get up there. I'd swap links but i had decided to try to keep my links to other sites to a minimum - to people I know or sites I visit often.
anyone have any ideas?
btw, my site is http://translucent-memories.com

I expect george to have replied you...well..well...
First of all, you're wrong in putting links to only sites you like.
For a new site, the basic you must do is to get as many links to your site and in return add a link to those who did the same.
First of all, you'll get incoming traffic..which is a good thing to start. But that's not all.
Search Engines, a few of them and particularly Google, takes the number of sites in Google that has linked to your site into calculation how good your ranking would be. That means, the more sites you get linking to your site, the higher you'll rank is some if not most search engines.
Search Engine is the second step to get more traffic. Then it'll depend on your site's quality to continue attracting current traffic and hope they promote your site through word of mouth or Tell a Friend form.
Good Luck!!!

Aside from search engines, there are always:
- topsites
- banner/button exchanges
- getting affiliates to display your link on their site
- link directories, like animenation.com/anipike.com

Search engines, especially the popular ones, do take a long time to accept and publish your link but, trust me, it's worth the effort.
Yahoo, especially, is good for driving traffic to your site. For mine, most of the traffic comes from searches done on Yahoo and Google. My most popular anime site gets up to 2,000 unique visitors a day.
However, my least popular one gets only 25. So you see, there are other factors to consider and one in particular: your site content. If it is a subject that many people are interested in, it will get more traffic. If your site has a relatively more obscure subject as its focal theme, then it won't get a lot of traffic. (My most popular site is about Rurouni Kenshin and my least popular is about an individual Japanese seiyuu.)
You can join webrings, cliques and do link exchanges, but these are not as effective in driving traffic to your site as getting listed on Yahoo will.

Go to established forums that allow links in signatures. And register and put a link back to here in your sig. Then post alot. I think scifi.com has forums that allow links. though I haven't posted there in years.
This will generate alot of search robot hits which will increase your ranking.
Also if people at the forums over there like what you bring to the forums, they will trickle here and join up.
Of course you need to increase the amount of fresh material here for them. I would suggest using the stumble upon add on for Firefox. That randomly finds fun webpages. then you can post the fun links here and talk about them.
btw, I would also do more with your site design. Pump up the graphics a little. I've run vBulliten software before, and you can do alot in the styles template. It just takes a little CSS knowledge. It's not good if you look like the default vb style.

Well you got your basic pirated content. Biggest thing on the web (music, video etc). Problem is, the RIAA wetworks team.
So you wanna go back to your traditional internet marketing - skin. Lots of skin. I dont mean you go out and harvest some people's epidermis. I mean you put on a bikini and go from there.
Of course if you're one of these uppity site admins like Eva2k you can try stuff like being awesome at making webpages. Personally, I prefer the bikini option.

I've tried link exchanges before and hated them. Adds too much clutter to your site. SEO is not particularly simple, unfortunately.

Good content. Content will give you search engine traffic for relevant searches and gives viewers a reason to link to you without bugging them to. Basically write well and link bait.
