I would personally recommend Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, or Gundam 08th MS Team

To someone whose never seen anime before....? Hmm.., depending on age.., I'd give them the following...,

Akira
Ranma 1/2
Ninja Scroll
Urotsukidoji
My Neighbor Totoro
Tenchi Muyu OAV
Dirty Pair - Project Eden
Giant Robo

Urotsukidoji, & My Neighbor Totoro are there to show the extremes of anime..., one is definately for adults only.., the other is for all age groups...,

I disagree that Urotsukidoji is an extreme to anime. It becomes silly after knowing something of the gender. I would take as an extreme Koroshiya Ichi anime. That's some extreme stuff, completely sick and perverted.

There are three anime titles that I'd use to start someone off in hopes of helping them realize the joy of anime:

Cowboy Bebop - it's got great action and a great story

Princess Mononoke - it's like watching a "real movie" in "cartoon" form (if he's prejudiced against anime)

Azumanga Daioh - the lighter side of anime. soooo addictive

Then from then on it's over... they'll watch Eva, Love Hina, .hack, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, Aa! Megami-sama... and on and on. Booyaka.

Standard male friend gets Cowboy Bebop.
Standard female friend gets Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Friends who have the same warped sense of humor as I do get FLCL.

Substitute Tenchi Muyo!, Spirited Away, and the first Kenshin OVAs at will.

Cowboy Bebop seems to be the most normal anime out there for someone who is new to anime. It's got good action, occasional humor, and classic western characters. The episodal nature is similar to most American shows, which may be good or bad, but it has its uber-cool moments that everyone should enjoy.

Or, if you want them to see a more artistic anime, and think that they have the capacity to appreciate anime that really tells a plot in a truly original and creative way, FLCL is good. It may be too strange for a newb, but if you feel that they are open-minded enough to appreciate it, there's nothing better.

For a quick hook into anime, and I have used this one before, go with Porco Rosso.. This is anime but it has the feel of a real classic movie. I can't see how anyone can leave a showing of Porco without that "WOW.. that was a cartoon?" expression on the face.

Oh, I agree Urotsukidoji isn't the most extreme anime you can find..., there are some titles I've seen that make it look very tame indeed..., hell.., it's a walk in the park compared to anime that deals with incest, gang rape, & paedophilia..., but most of these titles are unheard of outside of Japan..., Urotsukidoji is one of the more accessible 'extreme' anime that you can find...,

I think Inuyasha is a good start. It's a fantasy anime with action, comedy, adventure, and romance. I've actually gotten a few people into anime with Inuyasha. I loaned a couple of freinds, who had absolutely no prior interest in anime, all of my Inuyasha fan-subs, and they loved it.

I'd tell them to watch Azumanga Daioh. One of the funniest, cutest, coolest animes ever. It's even got a bit of action in it. It's GREAT, I'd recommend it to ANYONE.

Also: Rurouni Kenshin, Kare Kano and GTO. All great.
