G Gundam, Brilliant Parody or Complete Idiocy?
Ok so I've gotten the chance to watch G Gundam recently since I was unable to watch it durring it's first run. I've liked it but I'm not sure whether to classify it as something that's a brilliant send up of every anime or if it's just pure lunacy. However I am certain that it's secretly a kinky sex romp but that's for another thread. Can someone agree with one of my view points or disagree with another?

If by high art you mean it's fun to smoke pot and look at Mike Mignola's art, I'm in total agreement.

I don't know. Frankly I haven't looked that deeply into the show. I suppose it could be a type of parody on other shows and/or completely crazy (people turning yellow with energy is kind of weird). But I've never really considered that in any depth. I just have fun watching the show and since I enjoy doing that, I don't think about it too much. It would be interesting to see some other people's replies though. Oh, and I'm also wondering where you get the "kinky sex romp" from; I'll have to look for that other thread you mentioned.

I'm currently planning to once all the episodes are available on DVD, but you might want to watch in on CN to see if you like it enough to buy it.

G Gundam is quite certainly a deliberate insanity fest of Super Robot stereotypes. The G Gundam staff was well aware of how ridiculous it is to have a Gundam that turns into a fish, or a gundam that turns into a windmill, or to have a german ninja who pilots a german ninja gundam.
The ridiculous super robot cliches in Wing, however, are unintentional.

So I take it that you are leaning towards the parody aspect of this series Githon? Because personally that's what I'm thinking it is, especially as you put it so well that Giant Robots that fight each other are inherently goofy and this series puts that point to bed several times.

You can only consider me leaning towards that, if you consider several armed nuclear weapons flying through the air 'potential trouble'.
I'm fairly sure that the director and writers have made comments about it's parodyness.

I wonder if they have made comments about the kinky nature of the relationships between some of the characters.

I don't know if it is a parody. Yes it's utterly insane but the director Yasuhiro Imagawa loves to take a ridiculous setting and play it totally straight. Whether that's a sign of a brilliant sense of humor or a man too caught up in making a fun series to realize what he's doing, I guess we'll never know. The Gundam designs though, are based partially on the frequently ill-informed Japanese opinion of those countries' national identity.

I'd agree with you there but bringing up Yasuhiro Imagawa requires one to look at his other work which includes Giant Robo and I don't think that he made that as comedy oriented series. Sure there are some humorous moments and certainly there was a lot there that was rife for parody not to mention opportunity to play up a ridiculous setting as something that's totally straight. However it was done very seriously. Of course I think that I might need to investigate his other works to comment on this with any authority. Any suggestions Dryden-San?
