PS2 Troubles
My PS2 has problems reading blue backed disks. I have had it for two years or so and it has just recently started doing this. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone know how to fix it?

hmmm.... PS2's can be very tempremental, my old PS2 was very bad at playing DVDs but could play games just fine, my new model plays DVDs fine but has issues with PS2 DVDs sometimes
The fact that the problem has only manifest itself now instead of being there from the outset would mean it is either damaged/dirty discs or a damaged dirty lens in you PS2. The simple advise being to check you discs for scratches or fingureprints (and if your hiring games -peanut butter) or you could try running a lens cleaner in your PS2. If all else fails you could take it to a specialist and have the laser calibrated etc.
BTW always nice to see another PS2 user on the boards, enjoy your stay starwind.

Actually, Did you know that the life expectancy of a PS2 is 2 years? That's right, 2 years. Rumor has it that maker of the PS2 did this on purpose to make people buy more PS2's. But in any case, what you need to do is to either send it Sony and let them fix it or just buy another one. If I were you, I would just buy another one. The warranty is expired, plus it cost almost $200 dollars to replace the optical lens in the PS2: the one that reads the DVD-rom , the blue-backed ones. I had the same problem with mine, so trust me on this.
Side-Note
Don't play regular DVD's on your PS2, it wears down the optical lens much quicker, so I advice people to just use a regular DVD player.

For a while my PS2 wouldn't play anything, finally I got someone who knew what they were doing. Well it turned out the tar, and various other things had made the lens really dirty. Cleaned it off with some rubbing alcohol, and it works fine. I got mine used from a friend, who had it for around 2 years but hey it was cheap 75$ dollars!

The lens might be dirty. Or the game might need to be cleaned.
I have a problem like this right now, but it can't read one game. It always freezes on the same spot in the game all the time. This game is the only game that will not play on my PS2. I did send my PS2 to get fixed. Sony fixed it for me for free, but they couldn't find the problem. My PS2 will still not read that game at all. I can't really figure out what the problem is. I couldn't get my money back on the game. But I did get a trade-in on it.

I have this problem every once and while myself, though its always with my xbox and those magazine demo disks. A screen comes up saying it cannot read the disk and that it may be dirty. The way I solved this problem was to put the cd in simmering water for about 10 minutes. Pop'd it into my xbox, and works perfect, maybe give that a try.

by the by. the blue backed ones are CDs and the silver/gold ones are DVDs. FYI.
i think you people have care problems. my PS2 gets played quite often and not a single time has anything happened. in fact it plays badly scratched CDs my old playstation wouldn't play. if you follow the care instructions to the letter i'm sure it would last longer. i haven't vacumed mine in a year or so.
