I voted for 86-90. For those that question my choice let me list a few titles to come out of that period

Akira
Grave of the Fireflies
Laputa, Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Gunbuster
Wings of Honneamise

That's just a few I can think of off the top of my head

Well of course 1996-2000 for OLS, RK, Trigun, CB, and Eva. The big five. I should give the old, old anime credit though because they are the ancestors to these fine anime that probably gave future makers ideas on those five and inspired them to produce them. I concentrated my vote on the dub releases on dvd. I understand being it vhs or first release in Japan I might have voted a little differently, based on dates that is.

Peace. V

Edit: And well Eva on dvd only began in 2000 though so that overlaps into the next date tier, but overall I'm stuck between 96-00.

81-85 Baby! Its where the hair was really big, and men were men! It has my all time favorite series in that era, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) though it didn't set any standard it was a great story nonetheless.

Hmm...
86-90s has its stuff, but EVA is still too heavy. I'm not that sure about the cronologies of my other favourites, though. Lain, Boogie and the Black Jack OVAs... I suppose they're also more or less that time, ain't they?

This one's kind of hard because good anime is timeless, in a sense. What makes it even more confusing is your own age at certain eras of anime. I have a fondness for late eighties-early nineties work, but that's not so much a point about the quality of the era as it is the fact that I was a pre-teen at the time. Were I to see Teknoman today, I'd probably think it was crap. But given that it and others are essentially a part of my childhood, nostalgia lends them a lot of extra points.

But all in all, I'd have to say '96 -'00. Purely because I haven't seen enough of later work to really make an opinion call, and I've discovered a hithero untapped reservoir of love for Bebop after watching it again.

If the tool's there, use it. As long as it's used properly and not as an excuse for the animators to masturbate over what they can do, then I'm all for it. Full Metal Panic used CG well at times (though there were a few moments where I thought 'Well, that was gratuitous'). You can talk about the hard work that 80's animators put into their work, and more power to them. But by today's standards, most 80's animation was pretty horrid. If the medium doesn't advance, then it'll stagnate.
