I would strongly suggest, if your price range goes up to $150, you look into the geforce 6600GT for an extra $40. It's competitive with many top of the line cards, for half the price.

At this point I really don't know what to suggest because all of my research has been in PCI Express video cards, and I have this feeling you're looking for an AGP.

And that would be "aisle".

well i am trying to get the card either today or tomorrow.

I want to card to last at least 2 years so i am willing to spend $400 or so.

more importantly i want the card now as i dont have my own pc here yet and have bought bits and pieces so that i have one. All i need is the vid card.

would the 9800 pro last me 2 years?

The 9800 pro is a very good card by all acounts ... and the question about lasting 2 years will depend on your type of usage.

If you do general purpose computing with a mixture of games and multimedia ... I would say a qualified yes ... but if you are heavily into high end games like Farcry, Aquanox or Doom3 ... or say 3d modeling programs like lightwave then I would say no.

Keep in mind also, that the industry is on the edge of switching over some key elements in the home computing market ... namely pci express (replaces agp and pci bus) BTX motherboard form factor + btx 24 pin power supply standard (repaces ATX +20 pin psu) ddr 2, Sata300 and dual video options like SLI (2 8 x pci express slots tailored for videocards), dual core processors, and high capacity optical storage (dual layer and possibly blue ray).

actually 9800pro is fine for farcry/HL2 it's doom3 like games tha 6600GT would be better for next 2 yrs but depends on monitor resolution and AA/AF preferences you like i.e. 1280x1024 vs 1600x1200 with AA/AF to max etc heh

if you want something to last 2yrs then 256MB 6800GT would be more like it

9800pro is good for at least the next 6-15 months

ok well. i play mostly older games, though i am interested in HL2 and a few other games. Though i doubt id need a very very good card.

Resolution is at 1024x 768 a dont see any reason to go higher.

as for AA/AF i have no idea what that is so i cant say.

Eva2000, what is the difference between your 6800pro extreme and the normal 9600pro?
Is it 128mb ddr3? or what?

how long have you had it? and how long is it expected to last?

and when can i get it? (if i was going to purchase it.

though the fx6600gt is only $335
the v9999 gf 6800 is $450 or less.

i am guessing the 6800 or even the 6800ge would be better

Yeah 128MB Gecube 9800Pro Extreme R350 with 256Mbit memory bandwidth and Samsung 2.86ns ram

If you had to get them new 9800Pro extreme costs $400+ http://www.ausprices.com/cgi/Search?...+extreme&cid=0 as it's clocked by default higher than regular 9800Pro but difference is just 9800Pro extreme overclocks much higher heh

Regular 9800Pros non-extreme are $100 less than 9800pro extreme new.

I have Gecube 9600Pro as well and difference is pretty big between that and 9800Pro Extreme as i run at 1600x1200 resolution

You could always get 6800 12pipes and flash it to 6800GT 16 pipes to open up the 4 remaining pipes

read for AA/AF stuff http://3dgpu.com/archives/2004/08/09...0-tweak-guide/

for softmod 6800NU to 6800GT
http://www.digit-life.com/news.html?107374#107374

but @ 1024x768 difference in high end cards isn't that much in gaming

I believe the GT has more pipelines than the norm, and probably is clocked higher, but don't quote me on that. You could unlock the normal ones to GT by unlocking their pipes, but this isn't guaranteed to work.

A wise computer person once told me; "Set the price tag, and get whatever's closest to it."

which brand of 6800GT as at $520 sounds like an 128MB Asus 6800GT which in fact is a castrated real 6800GT 16 pipe card with 1/2 memory ... Asus 6800GE was as 12pipe card with DDR3 mem clocked higher than normal 12pipe 6800s non-GT/non-Ultras
