You need better peripheral vision.

I can kind of see that. I mean, you spend most of the time looking at the bottom half of the screen when reading those subs.

That's why the more you watch subs, the more you get used to quickly glancing down (with peripheral vision), picking out key words, and then back up to catch everything that's going on. The more practice you get, the less time you'll need to read the subtitles and the more time you get to spend appreciating the picture.

Although it's the other way for me. Whenever I watch an anime without subtitles that I've seen with subtitles before, I feel like the graphics are worse than when I saw them the first time. Probably because I don't notice deficiencies when I'm busy reading, but that's all you can notice when you don't have to worry about subtitles. It's never been the other way around for me, not with anime.

Usually I'll just freeze the video if the subs go by too fast.

Seriously, animation in most anime is cheap, so you don't miss much when the characters are talking.

Some anime you notice cool stuff in the background and whatnot when you dont use subs.

That said, I think a lot of anime use generic phrases so its not like I spend a large amount of time reading. The mind starts just auto-translating the stereotypical expression or emotion. Add that to the before-mentioned work-saving traits of many anime (flashbacks, still scenes etc) and there really isnt a lot to miss. I also think its handy having subtitles there, as its kind of a pain to concentrate on what people are saying.

I wish RL had subtitles. Usage of the words: "What?" "huh?" "mmm" etc would go down dramatically.
